Lindenwood rallies late, tops Bearcats


Story Headlines
- The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team fell to Lindenwood on Thursday afternoon, 16-9, at Bearcat Field.
- The loss drops the Bearcats to 16-16 overall and 11-10 in MIAA play. The Lions also even back out at 16-16 and are now 8-9 in conference action.
- The game was tied heading into the top of the ninth, 8-8, before Lindenwood plated eight runs on eight hits.
- Steven Garber hit his first two homeruns of the season.

Northwest Key Statistics
- The Bearcats scored nine runs on 11 hits but committed three errors. Northwest had four runs in the first, one in the third, three in the sixth and one in the ninth.
- Four of the Northwest runs were unearned as Lindenwood was tagged with four errors.
- The Lions scored 16 runs on 19 hits. Lindenwood had three runs in the first, three in the fourth, two in the sixth and eight in the ninth.
- Garber was 3-for-5 with two homeruns and three RBI.
- Kolby Greenslade was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk. He also stole his ninth base of the season.
- Kevin Handzlik was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
- Nick Gotta went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Derek Meyer, Austin Wulff, Nick Howard and Garrett Fort all scored runs for the bearcats.
- Fort had a pair of RBI and Howard had one RBI.
- Anthony Caenepeel started, going 5.1 innings. He allowed eight runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts.
- Lindenwood hit four home runs on the day.

Northwest Key Innings
- Gotta started the bottom of the first by reaching on an error. Meyer grounded to the pitcher but in trying to get Gotta at second, threw the ball away and everyone was safe. Paul Johnson laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third. Garber grounded out to short, scoring Gotta. After a Wulff walk and Greenslade was hit by a pitch, Howard was hit by a pitch, driving in Meyer. Handzlik singled up the middle to score Greenslade and Wulff to put Northwest back on top, 4-3.

- Garber led off the Northwest third with his first homerun of the day down the left field line.

- In the sixth, Greenslade reached on an infield single and it wasfollowed up by a Howard single to left field. After Handzlik laid down a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher, Northwest had runners on second and third with one out. Fort tripled to right center to score both runners. Fort would come around to score on an error by the cather to tie the game, 8-8.

- Garber began the ninth by belting his second homerun of the day, this time a shot to deep right center field to make it 16-9 Lindenwood.

- The MIAA series continues tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Both games will be seven-inning contests.
