Bearcats sweep Lions in Joplin


Story Headlines
- The Northwest Missouri State softball team solidified its spot in the top eight in the conference after sweeping Missouri Southern on Saturday afternoon in Joplin, Mo.
- The Bearcats used 14 hits to rally past the Lions in game one, 9-2, and followed that performance with a 5-0 victory in the nightcap.
- Northwest is now 19-19 this season and 12-8 in the MIAA, while Missouri Southern fell to 11-31 and 4-14 in the conference.
- The Bearcats did not commit an error on the day, while the Lions made a combined six errors.

Game One Key Statistics (Northwest 9, Missouri Southern 2)
- Sarah Baldwin threw a complete game for the Bearcats, giving up two runs on seven hits while striking out four Lions.
- Center fielder Cassidy Lee finished 4-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored.
- Senior Stephanie Mark added a single and a double, driving in two runs while scoring one of her own.
- Catcher Jessica Rawie reached base in three of her four plate appearances, coming in to score twice.

Game One Key Innings
- The Bearcats jumped out to a three-run lead in the first after Cassidy Lee reached on an infield single. The sophomore moved to second on Rebecca Maher's single up the middle and came around to score when Stephanie Mark sent a double to left. Two batters later, Baylee Scarbrough drove home Maher with a single to right, followed by an RBI single to center off the bat of Kendle Schieber.
- Northwest extended their lead in the third after Scarbrough was hit by a pitch to start the inning. She moved to third after Kendle Schieber and Abigail Gilson laid down sacrifice bunts. Jessica Rawie drew a walk to load the bases, a throwing error allowed Scarbrough to score. Lee knocked in a pair of runs with another infield single, followed by a sacrifice fly to left from Maher to make the score 7-2.
- The Bearcats added single runs in the fifth and seventh to put the game out of reach.
 

Game Two Key Statistics (Northwest 5, Missouri Southern 0)
- Kendle Schieber threw her third complete game shutout in the second contest, giving up just four hits while striking out seven. The junior never allowed multiple base runners and only one runner reached second base. At the plate, Schieber crushed her fourth home run of the season, driving in two runs while scoring to of her own.
- Freshman Abigail Gilson slapped a pair of singles and scored a run.
- Torri Blythe drove in a pair of runs on a fifth inning double.
- Baylee Scarbrough scored a run after reaching on a single.

Game Two Key Innings
- The Bearcats broke up the scoreless deadlock in the fifth after Baylee Scarbrough drove a single to left center. The right fielder moved to second when Kendle Schieber reached on an error. Abigail Gilson loaded the bases after she reached on an infield single. Jessica Rawie proceeded to knock in the first run of the game with a single to right. Torri Blythe followed that up with a double down the right field line, scoring two.
- Northwest extended the lead to 5-0 one inning later when Chantel Adams reached on a fielder's choice. Two batters later, Schieber deposited a pitch over the fence in left center to clear the bases.
 

Up Next
- The Bearcats will return home to host Truman State in a midweek non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 14. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
