Baseball splits Saturday doubleheader with Hornets


Story Headlines
- The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team split an MIAA doubleheader with Emporia State on Saturday in Emporia, Kan.
- Northwest is now an even 19-19 on the year and 13-14 in MIAA play. Emporia State improves to 25-10 overall and 16-10 in conference action.
- Both games, played at Glennen Field, were seven inning contests. Northwest won the first game, 8-6, but fell in the second game, 11-6.
 
Game One Key Statistics (Northwest 8, Emporia State 6)
- Northwest scored eight runs on 10 hits with one error. The Bearcats got three runs in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth.
- Emporia State had six runs on eight hits with two errors. The Hornets got one run in the second, three in the third, one in the fifth and one in the sixth.
- Steven Garber was 4-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. He hit his fourth homerun of the season in the third.
- James Holler was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a double.
- Kevin Handzlik was 1-for-3 with a homerun in the third. He scored two runs, had an RBI and drew a walk.
- Nick Gotta was 1-for-5 with a run and a stolen base. Austin Wulff was 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a walk.
- Kolby Greenslade was 1-for-4.
- Joseph Hietpas got the win, going 5.2 innings, allowing  six runs on six hits. He had six strikeouts and issued just two walks.
- Carson Smith got the final four outs of the game to record his seventh save of the year. He did not allow a run and gave up two hits. He struck out one and walked one.

Game One Key Innings
- Handzlik led off the top of the third with a solo homerun to deep left field, his second long ball of the season. With one out, Fort walked but was thrown out on a fielder's choice off the bat of Johnson. Garber was up next and took the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for his fourth homer of the year, scoring Johnson.

- With one out in the fourth, Holler doubled to right field. He moved to third on a passed ball and scored on another passed ball to make it 4-4. Handzlik drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Gotta reached on an error by the pitcher and Handzlik scored from second to put Northwest up 5-4.

- In the fifth, Garber singled with one out and moved to second two batters later on a Greenslade single. Both Garber and Greenslade moved up on a wild pitch as Holler drew a four pitch walk. Blake Hardegree reached on an error by the second baseman as Garber scored on the play to make it 6-4 Bearcats.

- Gotta singled to lead off the top of the sixth and was moved to second on a Fort groundout. Garber hit an infield single to score Gotta, making it 7-5. Garber moved to second on a wild pitch and scored as Wulff doubled down the left field line, making it 8-5 Northwest.
 
Game Two Key Statistics (Emporia State 11, Northwest 6)
- The Bearcats scored six runs on eight hits but committed two errors. Northwest got three runs in the first, one in the third and two in the fourth.
- Emporia State scored 11 runs on nine hits with three errors. The Hornets scored one in the first, two i the second, one in the third, six in the fourth and one in the fifth.
- Gotta hit his second home run of the season in the fourth inning, a solo shot to left. He was 1-for-4 on the day with two runs scored and an RBI.
- Garber was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Fort was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk.
- Johnson picked up an RBI and a run scored, going 1-for-3 on the day.
- Greenslade was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Hardegree and Wulff each had hits.
- Brad Roberts started the game, going 3.1 innings, allowing six runs on four hits. Only five of the runs were earned. He had two strikeouts and four walks.
- Northwest used five pitchers in the game. Austin Battaglia went 1.1 scoreless innings to finish off the game. He did not allow a hit and did not issue a walk.

Game Two Key Innings
- Gotta led off the first by reaching on an error by the shortstop. Fort drew a walk putting runners on first and second. Johnson singled to score Gotta, making it 1-0. Garber grounded out to second, moving Johnson to second and scoring Fort to make it 2-0. Wulff singled to move Johnson to third. Greenslade grounded out but was able to score Johnson on the play to make it 3-0.

- With one out in the third, Garber singled and moved to second as Wulff reached on an error. Greenslade singled to left to score Garber, making it 4-3 Northwest.

- With one out in the fourth, Gotta homered to left, his second of the season. Fort singled and moved to second as Johnson hit into a fielder's choice. But due to an error on the shortstop, both reached safely. Garber grounded into a fielder's choice as Johnson was thrown out at second but Fort was able to score from third.
