Softball wraps up weekend with non-conference split


Story Headlines
- The Northwest Missouri State softball team wrapped up play at the MWSU Apple Market Classic with a split on Sunday in St. Joseph, Mo.
- The Bearcats jumped out to an early lead and held on to defeat Concordia-St. Paul, 8-7.
- Northern State held the Bearcats to four hits in the second game, defeating Northwest 4-0.
- The Bearcats head into spring break with a 9-13 record.

Game One Key Statistics (Northwest 8, Concordia-St. Paul 7)
- Shortstop Rebecca Maher reached base three times and scored two runs from the leadoff spot.
- Senior Stephanie Mark finished 2-for-4 with a double, four RBI and two runs scored.
- Freshman catcher Jessica Rawie clubbed a pair of doubles, driving in two runs.
- Left fielder Kendle Schieber drove in two runs on three singles.
- Torri Blythe scored three runs after finishing 2-for-3 at the plate.
- Sarah Baldwin made the start for the Bearcats, surrendering two earned runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings pitched. The junior tallied two strikeouts and one walk.
- Senior Paige Blythe came in to throw the final 2 2/3 innings, earning the win after scattering three hits and giving up one run.

Game One Key Innings
- The Bearcats jumped out to an early lead when Rebecca Maher led off the first with opposite-field a single to right. After Torri Blythe beat out a bunt single, Stephanie Mark drove in Maher with a single through the hole at short. Two batters later, Jessica Rawie drove a double to left center, scoring Blythe. Kendle Schieber knocked in the final run of the inning on a bunt single.
- Northwest extended its lead in the second after Maher led off with another single. After Blythe and Mark both reached on a fielder's choice, Chantel Adams walked to load the bases. Jessica Rawie drove in a run with a botched infield fly and Schieber added her second RBI with a base hit up the middle.
- After the Golden Bears took a 6-5 lead with four runs in the top of the fifth, Ashley Wilcoxson started a Bearcat rally with a double to the gap in left center. Following an infield single from Maher, Blythe drew a walk to load the bases. Mark crushed a bases-clearing double to left center, putting the Bearcats back ahead, 8-6.
 

Game Two Key Statistics (Northwest 0, Northern State 4)
- Kendle Schieber struck out 10 Wolves batters over 6 1/3 innings while giving up three earned runs on six hits. Schieber's performance was the first double-digit strikeout effort for the Bearcats in over two years (Jenna Creger, 3/15/13). The junior added a single at the plate.
- Torri Blythe singled in the first and stole her 10th base of the season.
- Cassidy Lee and Rebecca Maher also added singled for the Bearcats.
- Abbie Vitosh came in to close out the game for Northwest, recording the final two outs and giving up one hit.

Game Two Key Innings
- Torri Blythe reached on a bunt single in the first. After swiping second, Blythe advanced to third on Stephanie Mark's groundout, but she was unable to score.
- The Bearcats looked to have something going in the fifth after Madison Jones and Cassidy Lee were on base with one out, but they were stranded on second and third when Blythe lined out sharply to the third baseman.
 

Up Next
- The Bearcats will travel to Liberty, Mo. on Wednesday for a mid-week doubleheader against William Jewell. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
