Softball splits with Southwest Baptist


Story Headlines
- The Northwest Missouri State softball team took one of two games on Friday afternoon against Southwest Baptist in Maryville.
- The Northwest Bearcats took game one by a final score of 2-1.
- SBU rallied to take the second game of the day, 7-6.
- On the year, Northwest is now 7-7 and 3-3 in the MIAA, while SBU moves to 8-13 and 2-6 in conference play.

Game One Key Statistics (Northwest 2, Southwest Baptist 1)
- Sarah Baldwin carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, finishing her fourth complete game. The junior surrendered just three hits and one walk, compared to five strikeouts.
- Stephanie Mark slapped a pair of singles to finish 2-for-3.
- Torri Blythe had one triple and scored a run.
- Rebecca Maher collected the only RBI for Northwest.
- Madison Jones drew a walk in her first at bat and came around to score.

Game One Key Innings
- Torri Blythe led things off in the first with a roped triple that came just inside on the right field line. She came in to score when Rebecca Maher sent a sacrifice fly to left.
- Madison Jones drew a walk to open the second inning and moved to second on Kendle Schieber's sacrifice bunt. Jones advanced to third when Cassidy Lee stroked a single to left. She came in to score when Lee stole second and the ball was mishandled by the SBU second baseman.
- After Maher made a diving catch to end the third, Baldwin recorded 1-2-3 innings in the fourth and fifth.
 

Game Two Key Statistics (Northwest 6, Southwest Baptist 7)
- Sophomore Chantel Adams reached base in all four of her at bats, smashing a pair of doubles and one single while totaling three RBI.
- Torri Blythe clubbed her second triple of the day and finished 2-for-4 with a stolen base, one run and one RBI.
- Stephanie Mark scored a pair of runs after reaching on an infield single and drawing a walk.
- Freshman shortstop Rebecca Maher added a pair of singles, scoring two runs and driving in another.
- Abbie Vitosh started game two for the Bearcats and gave up one earned run on four hits in three innings pitched. The senior struck out two and walked one.
- Kendle Schieber came in to pitch in the fourth and took the loss after giving up five runs in 2 2/3 innings.
- Senior Paige Blythe finished things off for the Bearcats by throwing 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball. Blythe walked two and struck out two.

Game Two Key Innings
- For the second game in a row, Torri Blythe opened the first with a triple, this time to left field. She came in to score when Rebecca Maher laid down a perfect bunt single. After Stephanie Mark walked, Chantel Adams plated two runs on a single to center.
- With the score standing at 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Kendle Schieber led off with a single through the right side. The pitcher moved to second on Ashley Wilcoxson's sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on Cassidy Lee's groundout to first. The small ball paid off when Blythe reached on a single deep in the hole at third, driving in Schieber.
- After loading the bases with one out, Schieber struck out Stormy Christerson looking. Down to her last strike, Emily Davis struck a double to left-center, driving in all three runs.
- Facing a 7-4 deficit in the bottom of the seventh, Maher started a rally with a one-out single to left. Mark followed that with a single of her own and they both came in to score when Adams crushed a double to deep right. Adams advanced to third on the throw home, but was the tying run was stranded there.
 

Up Next
- Northwest will travel to Missouri Western for another MIAA doubleheader this Tuesday (March 17). First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. in St. Joseph, Mo.
