Bearcats drop two against Missouri Western


Story Headlines
- The Northwest Missouri State softball team lost both games in Tuesday's doubleheader against Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo.
- The Griffons took game one, 1-0, and won the second matchup, 7-2.
- The Bearcats are now 7-9 on the year and 3-5 in the MIAA, while MWSU improved to 15-9 overall and 6-2 in conference play.

Game One Key Statistics (Northwest 0, Missouri Western 1)
- Sarah Baldwin finished her fifth complete game of the year, throwing six innings and giving up one run on six hits. The junior struck out four Griffon batters and walked just two.
- Freshman Rebecca Maher singled in the first and stole her second base of the year.
- Kendle Schieber singled and reached third base in the fifth inning, but was unable to score.
- Cassidy Lee finished 1-for-1 with a single and a sacrifice bunt.

Game One Key Innings
- Sarah Baldwin recorded three up, three down innings in the first and third.
- The Griffons scored their one run in the second, but the Bearcat defense kept it from being a big inning for Missouri Western. Jessica Rawie caught Paige Shifflett stealing for the first out of the inning. The Bearcats recorded another out on the basepaths when they caught Katie Klosterman in a pickle after she tried to score on Shelbie Atwell's double.
- Northwest had runners on second and third in the fifth after Cassidy Lee laid down a sacrifice bunt, but the Bearcats were unable to capitalize.
 

Game Two Key Statistics (Northwest 2, Missouri Western 7)
- Rebecca Maher finished 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
- Madison Jones scored one run on a single.
- Cassidy Lee came around to score after drawing a walk in the fifth.
- Abbie Vitosh started in the circle for Northwest, finishing five innings and giving up seven runs. She had one strikeout and one walk while giving up eight hits.
- Kendle Schieber came in to pitch the sixth inning, retiring the side with one strikeout and two groundouts.

Game Two Key Innings
- After the Griffons took a 4-0 lead in the third inning, Northwest cut the lead in half in the fifth. Madison Jones led off the frame with an infield single and moved to third on consecutive groundouts. Cassidy Lee extended the inning by drawing a walk and Rebecca Maher drove them in with a double to right center.
- The Bearcats were unable to complete the comback after Missouri Western extended its lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
 

Up Next
- The Bearcats will return to St. Joseph this weekend (March 20-22) when they compete in the MWSU Apple Market Classic. They will play two games each day, starting with contests against Upper Iowa and Minnesota State Mankato on Friday.
