Softball sweeps Upper Iowa in home opener


Story Headlines
- In its home opener, the Northwest Missouri State softball team picked up a pair of 2-1 victories over Upper Iowa Wednesday afternoon in Maryville, Mo.
- The Bearcats improved to 6-6 overall this season and 2-2 in conference, while the Peacocks fell to 3-12 on the year.
- Sarah Baldwin threw a complete game and earned the win in game one, while Kendle Schieber went the distance to earn the victory in game two.

Game One Key Statistics (Northwest 2, Upper Iowa 1)
- Sarah Baldwin threw her third complete game of the year, giving up one run on just four hits. The junior struck out seven batters while walking only two. With the win, Baldwin improved her record to 4-2.
- Rebecca Maher collected a pair of singles, scoring one run and driving in another.
- Chantel Adams added one RBI on a single in the first.
- Designated player Madison Jones reached on a single up the middle, finishing 1-for-3.
- Lea Crouse and Cassidy Lee each used a single to reach base while finishing 1-for-2.

Game One Key Innings
- Torri Blythe led off the game by reaching on an error by the right fielder. Rebecca Maher drove her in with a solid single to center and advanced to second on the throw home. Two batters later, Chantel Adams used a single up the middle to knock in Maher. The two runs in the first proved to be enough to seal the victory for the Bearcats.
- Sarah Baldwin never faced more than five batters in an inning, while recording a 1-2-3 inning on two occasions. In addition, Baldwin struck out the side in the fifth.
 

Game Two Key Statistics (Northwest 2, Upper Iowa 1 in 8 innings)
- Kendle Schieber earned her second victory this season, throwing eight solid innings. The junior gave up five hits while striking out seven and walking only one. This was Schieber's second complete game of the year.
- Sophomore third baseman Chantel Adams finished 2-for-3 with one double, one triple and one RBI.
- Stephanie Mark crushed a double over the centerfielder's head and came around to score one run.
- Making her first start at catcher, Abigail Gilson reached base once on a single.
- Torri Blythe drove in the winning run and stole her eighth base of the year.

Game Two Key Innings
- After the Peacocks scored one run in the first, Stephanie Mark and Chantel Adams used back-to-back doubles in the first inning to even the score.
- With the international tiebreaker in place, Kendle Schieber started the eighth inning at second base. Cassidy Lee moved her to third with a perfectly placed bunt single. Torri Blythe then hit a solid ground ball to the second baseman. The throw came home, but Schieber beat it out by fractions of a second.
- The Peacocks looked to have something in the fifth when Shelby Crist led off fifth with a double to right center, but Crist got greedy and tried to stretch it into a triple. Cassidy Lee fielded it cleanly in right and made a perfect throw to Blythe, who in turn threw a bullet to Adams who applied the tag just in time. Scheiber finished went on to record 11 straight outs after that hit to finish the game for Northwest.

- The Bearcats return to MIAA play when the play Southwest Baptist on Friday, March 13 in Maryville Mo. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
