Baseball wins twice, earns series split with RiverHawks


Story Highlights
- The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team picked up a pair of wins on Friday against Northeastern State at Rousey Field in Tahlequah, Okla.
- The Bearcats moved to 4-7 on the year and 2-2 in MIAA play.
- Northeastern State is now 6-3 and 2-2 in conference action.
- Northwest won the first game, a suspended game from Thursday, 12-10. The RiverHawks rebounded to win game two, 4-1.
- Three Bearcat pitchers combined for a six-hit shutout in the final game of the day, a 7-0 Northwest win.

Game One Key Statistics (Northwest 12, Northeastern State 10)
- The game was picked up in the top of the 8th with Northwest leading 9-5 after play Thursday was suspended for darkness.
- Northwest scored 12 runs on 10 hits with two errors.
- Northeastern State scored 10 runs with 13 hits and committed four errors.
- The Bearcats got three runs in the first, one in the third, on in the fifth, four in the seventh and three in the eighth.
- The RiverHawks scored one run in the second, four runs in the sixth and five in the bottom of the ninth.
- Nick Howard was 2-for-6 with a home run, his third of the season, four RBI and two runs scored.
- Kolby Greenslade and Steven Garber each went 2-for-5 with runs scored. Garber had two RBI and Greenslade had one.
- Nick Gotta and Derek Meyer each had doubles.
- Garrett Fort swiped two bases and James Holler had one.
- Anthony Caenepeel started the game and went 5.1 innings with five strikeouts and three runs allowed.
- Jacob Wagner got the final out of hte sixth inning and was credited with the win.
- Carson Smith pitched a scoreless seventh inning with a pair of strikeouts. Joseph Hietpas got the save after recording the final out of the game on a strikeout.

Game One Key Innings
- The Bearcats got on the board quick with a three-run first inning. Nick Gotta led off with a walk and two batters later, Steven Garber singled, moving Gotta to third on a fielding error. With runners on the corner and two outs, Nick Howard blasted his team-leading third home run of the season to put Northwest ahead.

- After scoring single runs in the third and fifth innings, Northwest blew the game open with a four-run seventh inning. Austin Wulff walked and Luke Wilkinson was hit by a pitch. After a wild pitch which put runners on second and third with no outs, James Holler came in to pinch run for Wilkinson on second. Derek Meyer grounded out to short, scoring Wulff as Holler moved up to third with one out. Garrett Fort walked and stole second. With two outs, Paul Johnson walked to load the bases. Kolby Greenslade hit an infield single to score Holler and keep the bases full. Garber forced an error on the shortstop, scoring Johnson and Fort.

- James Holler hit a one out infield single and stole second in the Bearcat eighth ining. Garrett Fort and Nick Gotta both drew walks to load the bases. Paul Johnson reached on an error by the first baseman, scoring Fort and Holler. With runners on the corners, Gotta scored on a steal but Johnson was picked off going from first to second to end the inning.
Game Two Key Statistics (Northeastern State 4, Northwest 1)
- The Bearcats scored one run on eight hits but committed two errors in the seven-inning game.
- Northeastern State scored all four-runs in the bottom of the fifth. The RiverHawks had seven hits and did not commit an error.
- Joseph Hietpas, who closed out the first game of the day, started and went 4.2 innings, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits. He walked four batters and struck out nine.
- Jacob Wagner came in to get the final out of the fifth inning and worked a scoreless sixth inning in relief.
- Nick Gotta, Steven Garber and Nick Howard all picked up a pair of hits for the Bearcats. Garber's sixth inning double was his third of the year.
- Kevin Handzlik and James Holler also picked up hits for Northwest.

Game Two Key Innings
- The Bearcats scored one run in the top of the sixth as Steven Garber hit a one-out double, moved to third on a Nick Howard single and scored on Luke Wilkinson's groundout.
 
Game Three Key Statistics (Northwest 7, Northeastern State 0)
- Northwest got seven runs on eight hits and did not commit an error.
- Northeastern State did not score and was held to just six hits by three Bearcat pitchers.
- Nikko Pablo went six shutout innings with three strikeouts. He allowed just five hits and did not issue a walk.
- Luke Wilkinson faced three batters in the seventh, allowing a walk but no runs.
- Carson Smith came in and finished off the combined shutout, going 2.1 innings with four strikeouts.
- Garrett Fort, James Holler and Austin Wulff all had two-hit games for the Bearcats.
- Wulff had five RBI with a homerun and a double. He walked three times and scored two runs.
- Holler was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. Fort also plated a run for the Bearcats.
- Steven Garber was 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored.
- Paul Johnson got the team's other RBI and was 1-for-4 at the plate with a double.

Game Three Key Innings
- Northwest broke open the scoring in the second inning, beginning with a one-out Steven Garber single. After a pitching change, Austin Wulff fell behind 0-2 before launching his second home run of the season to give the Bearcats a 2-0 lead.

- The Bearcats added two more in the eighth, all with two outs. Wulff drew a walk and scored on an error by the left fielder on a ball hit by James Holler. Holler moved to second on the throw and scored as Paul Johnson doubled to right center to put Northwest up 4-0.
 
- In the ninth, Northwest got some insurance and more, plating three runs. Garrett Fort singled and moved to second on a Nick Gotta sacrifice bunt. Adam Pennington got hit by a pitch and was pinch ran for by Aaron Barratt. With two outs, Garber walked to load the bases, bringin gup Wulff. On the first pitch he saw, Wulff doubled down the right field line, clearing the bases but was thrown out at home trying to score on a James Holler single in the next at bat.
