Volleyball beats Lions in five set road match


Story Headlines
- The Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team won a five-set match against Missouri Southern on Saturday evening in Joplin, Mo.
- The Bearcats improved to 14-7 overall and 7-4 in MIAA play. The Lions fall to 2-20 overall and 1-10 in conference action.
- Northwest hit .213 as a team and recorded 12 total blocks.
- Miranda Foster had 11 kills with 11 digs and three block assists.
- Setter Sarah Dannettell had a team-high 42 assists with 10 kills. She also had five digs, two blocks and a service ace.

- Senior libero Aarika Wittenburg had a team-high 12 digs defensively.
- Alexis Williams and Jackie Becker each had a strong defensive presence, each recording a solo block and five block assists. Williams finished the day with seven kills while Becker added five.
- Shelby Duren had a pair of blocks to go along with her nine kills, seven digs and a service ace.
- Freshman Maddy Bruder had nine kills, six digs, two blocks and a pair of assists.
- Northwest's bet set came in the third, hitting .357 as a team with 13 kills against just three errors.
- Missouri Southern hit negative in the first and third sets and finished the game with a .072 attack percentage.

Key Northwest Sequences
- Northwest used a 6-2 run in the first set to pull away from the Lions. Williams, Bruder and Foster all recorded kills in multiple succession to put Northwest up, 4-3. Foster and Williams then recorded a block to make it 5-3. After a Southern point, Bruder got a kill from Dannettell and Northwest forced a Southern attacking error. The Bearcats didn't trail the rest of the set en route to taking an early 1-0 lead.

- Down 8-6 in the fifth set, freshman Sofia Schleppenbach recorded a kill and forced a ball handling error from the Lions to tie it, 8-8. Southern came up big with two points to take a 10-8 lead but Northwest battled back with a kill from Dannettell and a kill by Bruder to make it 10-10. The Lions were forced into an attacking error to make it 11-10 and Foster and Williams came up with another block to give the Bearcats a 12-10 lead. After a Southern timeout, Bruder and Williams combined on a block to make it 13-10. Southern added another kill to make it 13-11 but Bruder recorded another kill to put Northwest at match point, 14-11. The Lions got a kill from Payton Graves to make it 14-12 but committed an attacking error on the next play to give the Bearcats the win.

Up Next
- Northwest will return home for the team's final two home games of the season. The Bearcats will host Washburn on Friday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m., followed by a home finale on Saturday against Emporia State at 3 p.m.
