Griffons advance past Bearcats in women's tennis NCAA regional, 4-2

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The No. 41-ranked Northwest Missouri State University women's tennis team saw its season come to end Friday at the hands of the No. 45-ranked Missouri Western Griffons in the first round of the 2026 NCAA Central Regional.
 
The Griffons (18-5 overall) avenged a 6-1 setback against the Bearcats in Maryville, Mo., on April 22, with a 4-2 win at the Huether Tennis Centre Friday in the NCAA Regional hosted by Augustana. MoWest will take on Augustana in the regional final Saturday at 11 a.m.
 
Northwest closes its season at 17-6 overall.
 
The Griffons took a 1-0 lead in the dual with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Northwest's No. 1 doubles duo of Polina Agapitova and Michelle Kostadinova gained a 6-3 victory over MWSU's Johanna Priedite and Cristina Granero Boj.
 
The Griffons scored the first singles win of the day at No. 4 when Claudia Pastor took a 6-2, 6-2 decision from Northwest's Laura Prieto Sieiro.
 
Northwest got on the board with a win at No. 6 singles from Agapitova over MoWest's Mila Larrieu, 6-3, 6-3. The Agapitova victory closed the MoWest lead in the dual to 2-1.
 
Northwest's Polina Gontaryk knotted the dual at 2-2 with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles over MoWest's Alejandra Ramirez Botella. It was Gontaryk's team-leading 19th singles win this season as she moved her winning streak to five in a row.
 
MoWest took a 3-2 lead as Johanna Priedite secured a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles against Northwest's Miru Nonaka.
 
The Griffons closed out the Bearcats at No. 3 singles. MoWest's Jevrosima Mitic posted a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 win over Northwest's Chiharu Ito.
 
The No. 1 singles match between Northwest's Majra Djokic and Cristina Granero Boj was halted in the third set when the Griffons had clinched the dual. Djokic dropped the first set, 6-3, but came back with a 6-2 triumph in the second set. Djokic led Granero Boj in the third set, 3-2.
