PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Northwest Missouri State University track and field squads opened the first day of the MIAA Championships hosted by Pittsburg State by shattering a school record and securing 11 spots in Saturday's finals.

Both the Bearcat men's and women's teams sit in seventh place through the opening day, with the men's squad earning five points and the women's team tallying four.

Olivia Bakker had a standout performance in the women's 10,000-meter run by shattering the Northwest school record and capturing a top-five placement for the 'Cats.

In the men's and women's 400-meter prelims,
Truman Hare and
Melanie Roland both captured the top qualifying spots, respectively, with Roland also securing a new facility record.

Kendall Tietjen found similar success in the 400-meter hurdles by also capturing the facility record and the top qualifying time.

In the men's hammer throw,
Dustin Wurtz secured the second-farthest throw in school history while earning a top-10 finish and a provisional mark.

Running EventsÂ
(M) 100-meter Prelims: Freshman
Isaiah Bates earned a qualifying time of 10.47 and claimed fifth overall in the prelims. Bates' time ranks as the fourth-fastest time in school history. Bates will compete in the finals on Saturday at 3:50 p.m.

(W) 100-meter Prelims: Sophomore
Krysta Abel claimed a Div. II provisional time of 11.68, which secured her third place.
Jaurdin Mallory (11.84) and
Hallie Henfling (11.93) also claimed top-10 spots for the 'Cats with fifth- and seventh-place finishes. All three qualified for finals which are scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday.Â

(M) 400-meter Prelims: Junior
Truman Hare crossed the finish line with a new Div. II provisional time of 46.41, capturing first place and beating his own second-fastest time in school history.
Logan Arellano secured a Div. II provisional time of 47.35 and earned seventh overall. Hare and Arellano both claimed
qualifying marks and will compete in the finals Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

(W) 400-meter Prelims:
Melanie Roland and
Kennedi Cline both qualified for finals by capturing the top two spots in the prelims with provisional times of 53.77 and 55.10, respectively. Roland also earned the Russ Jewett Outdoor Track & Field Complex facility record in the 400-meter dash.
Courtney Kiley secured 10th with a time of 57.87. Roland and Cline are scheduled to compete in the finals at 3:40 p.m.

(M) 400-meter Hurdle Prelims: Junior
Danny Jantzen secured a runner-up finish with a provisional time of 51.85. Sophomore
Aiden O'Leary crossed the finish line with a new Div. II provisional mark of 52.43, earning sixth overall and securing the new fourth-fastest time in school history. Both athletes qualified to run in the finals which are scheduled for Saturday at 4:40 p.m.

(W) 400-meter Hurdle Prelims:
Kendall Tietjen grabbed the top qualifying spot in the event with a provisional time of 1:01.11, which sets the new Russ Jewett Outdoor Track & Field Complex facility record in the women's 400-meter hurdles.
Josie McGraw placed eighth in the event with a time of 1:04.77. Tietjen is scheduled to start in the finals at 4:50 p.m. on Saturday.

(W) 10,000-meter Run: Sophomore
Olivia Bakker smashed the school record in the women's 10,000-meter run with a time of 36:10.69, earning fifth overall in the event.Â

Frank Sparks placed sixth with a Div. II provisional leap of 7.41m (24-3.75). Sparks set a new personal best.

Campbell Barta recorded a jump of 5.59m (18-4), earning her a 10th-place finish in the event.Â

(M) Hammer Throw: Freshman
Dustin Wurtz placed seventh overall and secured a Div. II provisional mark of 58.50m (191-1.1) – giving him the second-farthest throw in the school record books.

Northwest will be back in action for day two of the MIAA Championships tomorrow, Saturday, May 2 in Pittsburg, Kan. Saturday's events will begin with a continuation of the combined events at 10 a.m., with the field and running events starting later in the day at 3:15 p.m.
