Baseball travels to Newman for a three-game road series

The Northwest Missouri State University baseball squad will take a four-game win streak on the road to take on the Newman Jets in a three-game MIAA series beginning Friday.
 
This weekend's series between Northwest and Newman will be played at Equity Bank Park in Wichita, Kan. This will mark Newman's first home games played at the home of the Minnesota Twins AA affiliate, the Wichita Wind Surge.

Northwest is in a tie for fourth place in the MIAA standings with six league games remaining. The top 10 teams in the league's final standings will qualify for the 2026 MIAA Tournament set for May 6-10 in Edmond, Okla.
 
Northwest has eclipsed the 30-win mark for the 11th time in program history. Northwest has also registered 21 MIAA wins – only the fifth 20-plus win MIAA season in school history.

Northwest is 7-2 in MIAA series this year. The Bearcats picked up MIAA series wins over
Fort Hays State (2-1), Emporia State (2-1), Missouri Southern (3-0), Washburn (2-1), Pittsburg State (3-0), Arkansas-Fort Smith (3-0) and Northeastern State (3-0).
 
Northwest is 10-3 in one-run games. The Bearcats have outscored the opposition 102-58 in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings this season. Northwest is 2-1 in extra-inning contests.
 
The Bearcats are 5-4 vs. ranked opponents this season, including a three-game home sweep of No. 2-ranked Pittsburg State.

Sophomore Diego De Santiago is 5-2 with four saves and a 5.84 ERA in 19 appearances … he has a 1.95 WHIP … he has struck out 16 batters … tied for fourth in the MIAA with four saves … tied for No. 7 in the MIAA with five victories … he went 2-0 in a pair of relief appearances as Northwest completed a three-game sweep of No. 2-ranked Pittsburg State … De Santiago pitched 1 ⅓ innings in Saturday's 2-1 win over Pittsburg State … entered in top of the eighth inning of a 1-1 game with runners on the corners … got a groundout to keep the game tied and Northwest took the lead in the bottom of the eight. He worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the victory … on Sunday, De Santiago tied a season-high with three innings of relief work and gained the win when Northwest walked off a 9-8 triumph in the 11th inning … allowed a run in the ninth with two outs to allowed Pitt State to force extra innings … he worked around a double in the 10th but kept the Gorillas scoreless in the 10th and 11th before the Bearcats walked off another win in the bottom of the 11th to complete a three-game sweep … picked up a win and a save in a doubleheader at UAFS … UAFS staged a comeback in the eighth, scoring four runs, yet Northwest Missouri State preserved its lead at 11-10 … De Santiago closed out the game, securing the victory … De Santiago entered in the eighth with the tying run and third and he recorded a strikeout … UAFS loaded the bases in the ninth with no outs before De Santiago collected three consecutive strikeouts to secure his fourth save of the season.
 
Sophomore Logan Brasel is 2-2 on the season and has a 6.26 ERA with a 1.61 WHIP and 38 strikeouts … in eight MIAA starts, Brasel is 2-1 with a 5.15 ERA in 36 2/3 innings pitched with 28 strikeouts
 
Sophomore Jase Johnson is 4-0 in his 17 relief appearances … has tossed 32 innings with a 5.06 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP … has struck out 31 batters, which ranks fourth on the team.
 
Junior Bronco Whitt is 1-1 with a 4.26 ERA in eight appearances … has struck out 10 batters.
 
Senior Landon Wells is 3-2 with a 4.66 ERA in 29 innings pitched … has struck out 23 and walked 15.
 
Sophomore Gage Busby ranks second on the team with 36 strikeouts … has made eight starts and is 2-2 with a 6.68 ERA and a 1.76 WHIP.
 
Northwest head coach Tony Jandron led the Bearcats to a berth in the 2025 MIAA Baseball Tournament championship game while securing the most ever wins by a first-year coach in program history.
 
Jandron guided the Bearcats to a 27-25 mark in the 2025 season. Northwest went 19-17 in MIAA play and earned the No. 6 seed in the 2025 MIAA Tournament. In 2025, the Bearcats set the program record for home runs (57) in a single season.
 
The Bearcats were selected to finish ninth in the 2026 MIAA preseason coaches poll.
