No. 9 Rogers State takes two from No. 29 Northwest

CLAREMORE, Okla. — The No. 9-ranked Rogers State Hillcats notched a doubleheader sweep Saturday of the No. 29-ranked Northwest Missouri State University baseball team at the RCB Bank Sports Complex.

The Hillcats narrowly edged the Bearcats in game one, 6-5, before they secured a 14-6 victory in game two. Rogers State is 33-6 overall and leads the MIAA at 21-4 overall. The Bearcats are 27-12 overall and 17-8 in league play.

GAME ONE
Northwest Missouri State, ranked No. 29 in the nation, collected 12 hits and scored five runs, while the No. 9 ranked Hillcats capitalized on eight hits to secure the win. Frank Gall was hit by a pitch to reach base and later scored on a single by Jordi Ventura, giving Northwest Missouri State an early 1-0 lead. However, Rogers State responded in the second inning, scoring three runs to take a 3-1 lead. The Bearcats fought back in the fifth inning, with Sam Wornson and Leonardo May reaching base, allowing Gall to drive in two runs with a single. Yet, the Hillcats answered, maintaining a lead of 6-3 after five innings. In the eighth inning, Parker Griffith and Michael Good both reached base and scored following a single by Wornson, bringing Northwest Missouri State within one run, but ultimately fell short with a final score of 6-5.

Logan Brasel pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and six earned runs, while striking out three and walking one, taking the loss to bring his season record to 2-2. Jase Johnson relieved Brasel, pitching 3 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and one walk. Gall contributed offensively with two hits and two RBIs, while Wornson added three hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. Ventura recorded one hit and one RBI, and Griffith scored a run and drew a walk.

GAME TWO
Northwest tallied six runs on 10 hits, including a home run and five RBIs, but struggled defensively with four errors and left 10 runners on base. Rogers State took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning with two RBI singles. The Bearcats responded in the second inning with three runs, highlighted by John Connors' two-RBI single, taking advantage of a fielding error. However, Rogers State quickly regained the lead, ending the inning with a 4-3 advantage. The Hillcats pushed their lead to 7-3 in the third inning and to 10-4 by the end of the fourth, despite Frank Gall's solo home run. Northwest managed to score a run in the seventh and another in the ninth, but the game concluded with a final score of 14-6 in favor of Rogers State.
