Tellez captures win No. 100; Northwest fends off Southwest Baptist, 2-1

BRANSON, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State University head softball coach Naomi Tellez collected her 100th career coaching victory in a 2-1 win over Southwest Baptist at the D2 Battle and Juco Jam.

Northwest (7-4 overall) used a pair of first-inning runs to hold off SBU (1-4) for their fourth straight win.

Olivia Moyer got the win in the circle, tossing three scoreless innings of relief. She allowed three hits and one walk in moving to 2-1. Jadyn Streigle threw a 1-2-3 seventh inning with two strikeouts to secure her first save of the season.

Mackenzie Mlnarik went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases and a run scored to help generate the Bearcat offense. Mlnarik scored the first run of the game in the first. She singled with one out and moved to second on an infield single from Omara Love. Mlnarik and Love executed a double steal to move both runners into scoring position. Mlnarik crossed the plate on a groundout to the pitcher by Kaylee Cords. Love dashed across on a wild pitch to provide the winning margin.

Southwest Baptist scored its lone run in the second inning with the help of three hits, but the inning ended on an out at third base as SBU attempted to grab an extra base.

Northwest will take on UMSL (9:30 a.m.) and Maryville (11:30 a.m.) Friday to wrap up play at the D2 Battle and Juco Jam in Branson.

NOTES: Tellez becomes the fifth Bearcat softball coach to reach 100 wins (Ryan Anderson - 345; Gayla Steenbergen - 273; Pam Knox - 146; Susan Anderson - 124) ...
