PSU snaps Northwest's unbeaten streak

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Northwest Missouri State University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the No. 8-ranked Pittsburg State University Gorillas Thursday afternoon.

The loss snapped a three-game unbeaten streak for the Bearcats as the Gorillas improved to 11-0-4 overall and 5-0-4 in MIAA action. The Bearcats at 2-8-3 overall and 2-4-2 in conference matches.

The Gorillas limited the Bearcats to three shots with only one on goal in the shutout. Northwest goalkeeper Leyah Scott delivered six saves and allowed only a second-half goal to PSU's Sammie Edwards.

The Bearcats kept Pittsburg St. off the board through a first half spent largely under pressure, with Leyah Scott making five saves to help send the match to halftime scoreless. After the opening minutes, Northwest faced a stretch that included saves by Scott on Sarah Peyton Webb and Abby Hoffman, two Pittsburg St. corner kicks and a shot that went high from Piper Hughes. Pittsburg St. continued to press later in the half, hitting the woodwork in the 26th minute and producing multiple shots and corners, but Scott added saves on Sammie Edwards and Danae Hobson to preserve the 0-0 score. Northwest also played through a physical middle portion of the half without a card, and Scott closed the half with another save on Livi Jones in the 45th minute to keep the match 0-0 at the break.

Northwest conceded the only goal of the second half in the 64th minute, when Sammie Edwards scored for Pittsburg St. off an assist from Makenna Herrick to make it 1-0. Earlier, Scott kept the match scoreless with a save on Adelynn Phipps in the 54th minute after Pittsburg St. generated pressure with corner kicks. After falling behind, the Bearcats kept the margin at 1-0 through a stretch that included four Pittsburg St. shots from 66:28 to 76:36, then created chances of their own on attempts by Julia Coacher, Mackenzie Jordan and Addy Armstrong. Jordan put Northwest's only shot on goal of the half on frame in the 79th minute, but Jocelyn Kramar made the save, and the match finished with Pittsburg St. ahead 1-0.

Northwest will return to action Sunday at Fort Hays State. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m. in Hays, Kan.
