The Northwest Missouri State University women's and men's tennis teams are on the rise in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rankings.
The Bearcat women (12-7 overall, 7-1 MIAA) have moved up 12 spots to No. 37 in this week's national rankings. The women have two ranked singles players in
Marielena Muench (No. 30) and
Alva Norberg (No. 60). The Northwest men (12-8 overall, 7-2 GAC/MIAA) have climbed nine slots to No. 40 in this week's rankings.
Dominik Wijntjes surged up four spots to No. 17 in this week's NCAA Div. II men's singles rankings.
Muench moved up 31 spots in the women's singles national rankings after she scored No. 1 singles wins over Emporia State's Giovanna Ferreira (6-1, 7-5) and Washburn's No. 18-ranked Renske Ubachs (6-2, 7-5). Muench is 10-8 in dual play, which includes a mark of 5-3 in MIAA dual action this spring. Muench is 2-2 against nationally-ranked foes this year.
Norberg has compiled a singles mark of 16-6 overall and 14-5 in dual play. Norberg is 6-2 in MIAA matches. Norberg has won seven of her last 10 singles matches.
Wijntjes moved back into the top-20 after he topped Emporia State's No. 19-ranked Anton Sarunic in a three-set thriller (7-5, 3-6, 7-6) last week. Wijntjes is 18-5 in singles play this year. He is 16-4 in dual matches and his 7-2 against MIAA foes. Wijntjes has a 6-2 mark against nationally-ranked opponents.
The Northwest women will wrap up MIAA play today at Missouri Western. The Bearcats and Griffons will square off at the Noyes Courts in St. Joseph, Mo., today at 3 p.m. A Bearcat victory would ensure a regular season MIAA crown for the Bearcats. Northwest has won 13 MIAA regular season titles and one tournament crown in program history.
