KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State University junior
Ben Haug has been named the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Pitcher of the Week, announced Monday.
Haug, a Marshall, Mo., native, delivered a dominant performance in Saturday's 5-1 win over Newman, striking out 14 batters in a complete-game effort – his second of the season. He allowed just three hits, gave up one unearned run, and didn't issue a walk as he carved through the Jets lineup.
His 14 strikeouts were just three shy of the Bearcat single-game record of 17, set by Steve Nelson against Lincoln on April 15, 1989. The outing marks the most strikeouts by an MIAA pitcher against a conference opponent this season.
Newman's first hit, and lone run came in the second inning. Haug then held the Jets hitless until the sixth inning and didn't surrender another until a double to lead off the ninth.
Haug's performance marked the first nine-inning complete game by a Bearcat pitcher since the 2022 season.
Haug (4-3) owns a 5.37 ERA and 1.48 WHIP across a team-high 55 1/3 innings pitched in 10 starts this season. He leads Northwest with 58 strikeouts, which ranks sixth overall in the MIAA.
