WICHITA, Kan. - The Northwest Missouri State University men's tennis team got back to its winning ways Saturday with a 4-3 dual win over the Newman Jets in GAC/MIAA play.
The Bearcats improved to 11-7 overall and 6-1 in GAC/MIAA dual action. The Jets dipped to 6-8 overall and 1-3 in league dual play.
Northwest scored wins at No. 2 doubles from
Dominik Wijntjes and
Antonin Leborne and at No. 3 doubles from
Bernardo Henriques and
Vini Rodrigues to take a 1-0 lead in the dual.
The depth of the Bearcat singles play took over as Northwest gained wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles to clinch the team victory.
Henriques made his Bearcat debut and he posted a three-set win in singles to go with his doubles win for a 2-0 day. Henriques topped Newman's Andrea Bramati at No. 4 singles.Â
LeBorne won his fifth straight singles match with a 6-0, 7-6 victor at No. 5 singles over Newman's Tikhon Sorokin. Leborne is 15-4 on the season and 15-2 in dual play. Leborne is a perfect 5-0 at No. 5 singles this spring. Leborne is 6-1 in GAC/MIAA dual play.
Vini Rodrigues toppled Newman's Andrea Torrini at No. 6 singles in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. It was Rodrigues's 14th singles win this season. He is 5-2 in GAC/MIAA dual play.
Northwest will be at home next week with matches against Emporia State (Friday, 2 p.m.) and Washburn (Saturday, 10:30 a.m.) on the Grube Courts at the Rosewell Tennis Complex.
