MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team made quick work of the Newman University Jets in securing a 5-1 home win Saturday.
Â
The win moves the Bearcats to 19-18 overall and 13-11 in MIAA play. The Jets fell to 8-28 overall and 4-22 in league play. Newman has lost 15 straight games.
Â
Bearcat starting pitcher
Ben Haug tossed Northwest's first nine-inning complete game since the 2022 season. Haug struck out 14 batters and was three away from the Bearcat single-game strikeout mark set by Steve Nelson vs. Lincoln on April 15, 1989.
Â
Haug allowed three hits and an unearned run as he moved to 4-3 on the season. Haug did not walk a batter.
Â
Haug did not wait long to work from ahead in the contest as Northwest plated three runs in the first inning.
Ryan Williams ripped a double down the left field line to plate
Ashton Neuman for a 1-0 lead.
Kaehukai Young singled home Williams for a two-run advantage.
Dylan Hufft scored as Young got caught in a rundown between first and second for the third run of the opening inning for the Bearcats.
Â
Newman would score an unearned run in the fourth when leadoff batter Eli Wohl reached on an error by Bearcat shortstop. Anthony Cannavino reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Trent Trammell recorded the first hit off Haug on a two-out single to center to score Cannavino for Newman's only run of the game.
Â
Haug did not allow another hit until one out in the sixth. Newman's final hit of the contest was a Wohl double to lead off the ninth.
Â
Jacob Selock doubled to lead off the seventh and scored when
Dylan Hufft reached on an error with two outs to give Northwest a 4-1 lead.
Â
Northwest added another unearned run in the eighth to provide for the final 5-1 margin.
Â
Northwest will look for the series sweep on Sunday. Northwest and Newman will get game three underway at 1 p.m. at the Bearcat Baseball Field.
