MARYVILLE, Mo. – Senior
Ryan Williams crushed his 20th career home run in walk-off fashion, delivering a three-run walk-off blast to lift the Northwest Missouri State baseball team (14-16, 8-9 MIAA) to an 8-5 win in 11 innings over Rogers State (19-10, 9-8) at Bearcat Baseball Field.
Williams finished the day 2-for-5 at the plate with a team-high three RBI.
Chester Brooks contributed with a 2-for-6 performance, launching his second homer of the season in the fifth.
Kaehukai Young ripped the game-tying, two-RBI double in the ninth.
Connor Polli (2-1) earned the win in relief in the eighth, tossing the final four innings, allowing just two hits and two runs.
Rogers State struck first, scoring on a balk by Northwest starter
Jaren Guck before extending its lead to 3-0 with a two-run homer. The Bearcats got on the board in the fifth, also first hit, when Brooks sent a solo shot over the fence. After five innings, Northwest trailed 3-1.
Dylan Hufft opened the sixth with a double and later scored on a
Brady Miles RBI double, trimming the deficit to 3-2.
Jayme Fritts took over on the mound in relief of Guck, followed by Polli in the eighth. Rogers State responded with a two-run homer to push its lead to 5-2.
The Bearcats refused to go down quietly. In the ninth, back-to-back-to-back singles from
Max Pawela,
Leonardo May, and
Jacob Selock loaded the bases with no outs.
Ashton Neuman took a pitch off the elbow to bring in a run, and Young followed with a clutch two-RBI double to tie the game at 5-5, forcing extra innings.
Polli kept Rogers State off the board in both the 10th and 11th innings. After consecutive singles from Brooks and Neuman in the bottom of the 11th, Young hit into a double play, but Hufft worked a walk to keep the inning alive. That set the stage for Williams, who battled to a 3-1 count before crushing a three-run homer, sealing the 8-5 victory for Northwest.
