BOLIVAR, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University Bearcats used a three-set victory at No. 6 singles to edge the No. 47-ranked Northwest Missouri State University women's tennis team in Saturday dual action.
Northwest dropped to 5-5 overall, while SBU moved to 6-4 overall.
SBU gained a 1-0 lead by gaining wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Northwest's No. 2 doubles duo of
Alva Norberg and
Miru Nonaka secured a 6-2 victory. It marked the fifth time this season the Bearcats failed to win the doubles point.
Marielena Muench blew past No. 43-ranked Paula Balleseros at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Muench ran her win streak to five matches in a row and she sits at 6-3 in dual play.

Alva Norberg continued her winning ways with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 triumph over SBU's Defne Ursan at No. 2 singles.Â
Anne Carvalho Pereira put up a three-set win over SBU's Leticia Luiz at No. 4 singles, 4-6, 6-2 and 6-2. Pereira has won five straight dual matches.
However, SBU's Maria Clara Zotti held on for a 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 6 singles over Northwest's Nonaka for the dual clinching point.
The Northwest women will be at home for three dual matches this week against Southern Arkansas (Thursday, 11 a.m.), Fort Hays State (Friday, 3 p.m.) and Nebraska-Kearney (Saturday, 1 p.m.).
