MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State baseball team (10-12, 4-6 MIAA) made a statement Tuesday afternoon, knocking off No. 3-ranked Central Missouri (17-5, 8-2 MIAA) with a 6-3 victory at Bearcat Baseball Field. The win marks Northwest's first triumph over a top 5 opponent since 2021 and its first home win against the Mules since 2018.
Northwest starterÂ
Brock Steggall (3-1) delivered a stellar performance on the mound, tossing seven complete innings while allowing just six hits and three runs. He also racked up a career-high seven strikeouts to pick up his third win of the season.Â
Leonardo May came in to close the door, earning his first save with two shutout innings while surrendering only one baserunner.
At the plate,Â
Brady Miles launched a two-run homer in the fourth to tie the game at 2-2 to total a game-high two RBI.Â
Dylan Hufft contributed an RBI single and reached base three times, whileÂ
Ryan Williams extended his on-base streak with a clutch RBI double in the fifth – has reached base in all games this season.Â
The game opened as a pitchers' duel, with both Steggall and UCM's JD McReynolds keeping offenses in check. Central Missouri struck first with a run in the third and fourth, but Northwest responded in the fourth as Miles (2) crushed a no-doubt home run over the left field fence to knot the game up at 2-2.Â
After the Mules regained a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth, the Bearcats answered in a big way.Â
Jacob Selock walked and later advanced on a wild pitch beforeÂ
Ashton Neuman was hit by a pitch to put two runners aboard. Williams' RBI double knotted the game at 3-3, and after a UCM pitching change, Hufft's RBI single gave Northwest its first lead of the game at 4-3. Two more runs crossed on a wild pitch, capping a four-run inning that put the Bearcats in control, 6-3.
Steggall worked seven strong innings before handing things off to May, who shut the door with two hitless frames to seal the victory. With the win, the Bearcats snapped a four-game losing streak.Â
