Softball tumbles at home to Northeastern State

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State University softball squad tumbled on both ends of a doubleheader Saturday against the visiting Northeastern State University RiverHawks.

Northeastern State won both games of the twin bill by the counts of 6-4 and 4-1.

The Bearcats saw their losing streak extended to six in a row in falling to 10-15 overall and 0-4 in MIAA play. The RiverHawks improved to 9-17 overall and 3-5 in league action.

GAME ONE
NSU bounced out to a four-run lead and hung on for a 6-4 victory in the opening game of the doubleheader.

NSU scored two in the first and two more in the third to build a 4-0 advantage.

Skylar Pieper ripped an RBI-double on a full count to left field to plate Omara Love in the fifth inning to pull the Bearcats to within 4-1.

NSU pushed the lead back to four at 5-1 with a run in the sixth.

Northwest's Grace Lubben connected on her first home run of the season and first RBi with a solo blast to right field through the stiff breeze in the sixth innings. Lubben's homer left the RiverHawks on top, 5-2.

NSU tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh to take a four-run lead to the bottom half of the seventh.

Pieper delivered a sacrifice fly to left to score Love. Malia Cuevas followed with an RBI-single to second base to score pinch runner Mackenzie Mlnarik to pull Northwest to within two runs at 4-2.

Northwest registered five stolen bases in the first game as Love tallied two swipes.

Love and Lillie Filger each tallied two-hit games. Love scored two runs and Pieper drove in two.

Bearcat starting pitcher Jadyn Streigle pitched six innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits. She struck out three batters in taking the loss to fall to 1-5 on the year.

GAME TWO
The RiverHawks took a 4-0 lead and were able to close out the second game of the doubleheader, 4-1.

NSU scored two first-inning runs via base-running advantages. The RiverHawks scored the first run on a wild pitch and the second one on a play where Northwest threw out a base runner stealing second, but the RiverHawks had a runner score from third on the throw down to second.

The RiverHawks added two more in the third to take a 4-0 lead off Bearcat starting pitcher Rien Moore. Moore suffered her first loss of the season and dropped to 5-1.

Northwest scored its lone run of the second game on an RBI-single from Alexis Brown in the third. Brown brought home Curstin Todd to cut the NSU lead to 4-1.

Bearcat reliever Olivia Moyer pitched nearly flawless ball over the final four innings. Moyer struck out eight and allowed one hit and one walk as she faced 14 batters.

The Bearcats added four more stolen bases in the second game with Filger notching two thefts. Filger went 2-for-2 with a walk.
