Young, Williams each drive in four; Bearcats claim weekend series over CSP

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State baseball team (6-8) claimed its second series of the season in dominant fashion, rolling past Concordia-St. Paul, 14-4, in Saturday's finale at Bearcat Baseball Field.

Kaehukai Young set the tone early with a go-ahead grand slam in the first inning, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs. Young was one of six Bearcats to record multiple hits, with Ryan Williams matching his four-RBI performance. Leonardo May added to the offensive outburst, crossing the plate three times, including a fourth-inning triple.

On the mound, Jaren Guck (1-1) earned his first win of the season behind six innings of work and a season-high seven strikeouts. Landon Wells shut the door in the final two frames, allowing just one run while striking out three.

The Bearcat defense was flawless throughout the weekend, playing error-free baseball while the offense exploded for 28 runs on 29 hits in the three-game set.

CSP had its bats hot early, plating three runs on four hits in the opening frame. However, Northwest quickly responded with a leadoff single by Ashton Neuman.

Ryan Williams drew a walk, followed by a Dylan Hufft single to load the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the first. Young saw a 1-2 count and crushed a grand slam over the left field fence to put the Bearcats ahead 4-3.

Starter Guck hung a zero up in the third, as the Bearcat offense piled on five runs to claim a 9-3 lead. Leonardo May reached on an error, as Alex Bowers followed up with a single through the right side. Brody Hufft hustled out a bunt single, scoring May from third. Neuman drew a bases loaded walk, scoring another run and B. Hufft later scored on a wild pitch. Williams cracked the game open with a two-RBI double to round off the half inning.

While May crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the fourth, Williams picked up his third RBI in the seventh with a single to lead 11-4. Northwest struck three more runs in the eighth, while a walk-off base on balls plated the 10-run rule, sealing the deal for Northwest, 14-4 in eight innings.
