'Cats come up short on day two of Alvy Early Classic in Arkansas

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – The Northwest Missouri State University softball squad came up on the short end of two contests Saturday at the Alvy Early Classic.
 
Upper Iowa gained a come-from-behind 4-2 win in Northwest's first game of the day. Arkansas Tech notched a 9-6 triumph in Northwest's final game of the tournament. Northwest is 4-5 on the season.

UPPER IOWA 4, NORTHWEST 2
The Bearcats allowed four seventh-inning runs to score in dropping a 4-2 decision to the Upper Iowa Peacocks.
 
Northwest put up a run in the first on three hits but could have done more damage as it left the bases loaded. Lillie Filger led off the contest with a single to left field. Alexis Brown reached on a bunt single to put runners on first and second. Omara Love ground out to move both runners up a base. Skyler Pieper grounded to give the Bearcats two outs in the inning. Malia Cuevas drew a walk to load the bases. Riahn Pinkerton delivered a run-scoring single to right to plate Filger and give Northwest a 1-0 advantage. Annie Gahan struck out to end the inning.
 
Bearcat starting pitcher Olivia Moyer did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. Moyer had scattered two hits through six innings when she went to work on a shutout in the seventh. However, she was lifted two batters into the seventh after allowing a hit and a runner to reach on an error.
 
Bearcat head coach Naomi Tellez turned to Rien Moore with a pair of runners on with no one out in the seventh. Moore was greeted with an RBI-single to tie the game. Following a strikeout, Moore's defense committed another error allowing the go-ahead run to score. A two-RBI double followed to give the Peacocks a 4-1 lead. Moore retired her last two batters to head to the bottom of the seventh.
 
Northwest mounted a rally as Filger worked a walk and Brown singled. Love grounded out to move the Bearcat runners into scoring position. Pieper struck out for the second out. Cuevas served an RBI-single to center to score Filger and slice the UIU lead to 4-2. Riahn Pinkerton lined out to second to end the game.
 
Brown led the offensive attack with two hits and Filger scored both runs.
 
Moyer worked 6.0 innings and allowed three hits and two runs (both unearned). Moyer struck out eight Peacock batters and did not allow a base on balls.
 
ARKANSAS TECH 9, NORTHWEST 6
Arkansas Tech used a four-run sixth-inning rally to post a 9-6 win over Northwest.
 
Arkansas Tech moved to 5-6 on the season with the win.

Northwest scored single runs in the first, second, sixth and seventh innings to along with a two-run fifth inning. However, it was enough to overcome the nine runs allowed by the Bearcat pitching and defense.

Northwest managed four hits and Riahn Pinkerton came through with two of the hits.

The Bearcats will travel to St. Louis next Sunday for a doubleheader against Missouri-St. Louis.
