Griffons late goal stuns Bearcats, 1-0

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Northwest Missouri State women's soccer dropped a 1-0 decision to Missouri Western at Bearcat Field. 
 
Northwest has now brought its record to 10-6-1 overall and 7-4-1 in the MIAA, as Missouri Western is now 10-2-6 overall and 6-2-4 in conference action. Northwest is now tied with Missouri Western for No. 4 in the MIAA rankings.
 
The match between Northwest Missouri State University and Missouri Western State University began with both teams striving to establish control. Northwest initiated the offensive efforts with Ximena Arnau taking an early shot in the third minute, which went out top left. Lily Ellis stood firm in goal, making a crucial save against a shot from Kendall Knisley in the fifth minute.
 
Margaret Madden and Lillie Shaw both attempted to break the deadlock with shots that missed the target. Arnau came close again in the 31st minute, but her attempt was saved by Missouri Western's goalkeeper, Katie Stoskopf. As the period concluded, Northwest maintained consistent pressure, though both teams remained scoreless at the break. The score was tied 0-0.
 
The second period began with MoWest applying early pressure, leading to multiple shots on goal. Ellis stood firm in the net for Northwest, making crucial saves against attempts by Rosemary Pujado and others.
 
Midway through the period, Northwest earned a corner kick, but Chloe Collins' effort was unable to break the deadlock. Despite a resilient defense, MWSU found the breakthrough in the 81st minute with Knisley scoring, assisted by Pujado and Aidyn Woodall.
 
In the closing minutes, Abby Overbay had a shot saved, and the Griffons maintained their defensive stance to secure the 1-0 victory. The period ended with Missouri Western leading 1-0.
 
Ellis had eight saves while facing 14 shots, bringing her to 93 saves this season and 363 saves in her Northwest career, placing her 2nd-best in school history for career saves.
 
Up Next: 
With today's loss the Bearcats will be away for the first round of the MIAA tournament on Sunday, Nov. 9. The MIAA will release the full tournament bracket later this evening.
