Bearcats fly past Cardinals, 70-44

MARYVILLE, Mo. — The Northwest Missouri State University women's basketball team defeated William Jewell at Bearcat Arena, 70-44.

Northwest capitalized on 23 points off turnovers. This victory marked the third consecutive win for Northwest, further extending its winning streak at home to five games. Northwest improved to 4-3 overall and William Jewell fell to 0-4 on the season.

Northwest Missouri State opened the game assertively, quickly establishing control with an 8-point advantage thanks to efficient shooting and fast-break opportunities. Bailey Birmingham contributed significantly, assisting on early plays and scoring a fast-break layup at 5:47 to extend the lead. WJC struggled with turnovers, committing six in the quarter, which Northwest Missouri State capitalized on to maintain momentum. By the end of the first quarter, Northwest Missouri State led 25-11. Northwest held William Jewell to 44 points, the lowest scoring output by a Bearcat opponent this season.

In the second quarter, Northwest Missouri State extended its lead with a commanding start, highlighted by Kirsten Hauck's two 3-pointers, including one at 9:15 to push the score to 28-12. The home team maintained defensive pressure, forcing seven turnovers and converting them into quick points, while Bailey Birmingham contributed two free throws at 8:53 following a steal. Despite a brief push from the Cardinals, Northwest Missouri State closed the half ahead 41-22, maintaining their advantage through consistent defensive rebounds and capitalizing on turnovers.

Northwest surged at the start of the third quarter, with Hauck sinking a 3-pointer at 9:59, assisted by Birmingham, to extend their lead. Birmingham continued to impact the game with another 3-pointer at 9:00, assisted by Avery Yosten. This momentum carried the home team to a dominant stretch, outscoring WJC 20-9 in the quarter. Northwest collected a season-high 12 steals against the Cardinals, showcasing their defensive prowess.

Northwest took advantage of turnovers and fast breaks, highlighted by consecutive layups from Birmingham and Sadie Maas, the latter assisted by Andrea Lopreato. Maas has been a consistent defensive force, blocking at least one shot in 13 consecutive games, including this matchup. The home team controlled the boards with a 12-3 rebound advantage on the offensive end. Northwest won the rebounding battle, 40-31. Northwest has won the rebounding battle in five of its seven games.

Northwest maintained its lead during the final quarter, aided by a crucial three-pointer from Kenzie Melcher at 5:53 and a subsequent layup from Ella Moody at 5:11, extending its advantage. Despite some turnovers, the home team capitalized on defensive rebounds, limiting the Cardinals' opportunities. Brooklyn Stanley added a layup and a free throw in quick succession around the 3:25 mark, sealing the effort. The game concluded with Northwest Missouri State securing a 70–44 victory. With this win, Bearcat head coach Austin Meyer improved to 3-0 all-time against William Jewell.

Andrea Lopreato scored 15 points and recorded two steals. Birmingham also contributed 15 points while adding three steals and three assists. Boston Wand collected 10 rebounds, including two blocks in the game. Wand has now delivered 10 rebounds in back-to-back games. Hauck made four 3-pointers, contributing to her 12-point performance.

Looking ahead, Northwest Missouri State will host Graceland on Sunday, Nov. 30. The matchup is set for 1 p.m. at Bearcat Arena in Maryville, Mo.
