MARYVILLE, Mo. - The No. 21-ranked Northwest Missouri State University women's soccer team posted its seventh shutout of the season and gained its fifth win in six matches with a 2-0 blanking of Fort Hays State.
The match between the Bearcats (8-3 overall, 5-1 MIAA) and the Tigers (3-8-1, 1-5-1 MIAA) began with Northwest Missouri State quickly asserting themselves offensively. Within the opening minutes,
Ximena Arnau and
Maddie Gemeinhardt each took shots, though neither found the back of the net.
Lily Ellis, playing as goalkeeper, was crucial in maintaining a clean sheet, saving a shot from Sydney Cotter early in the half.
FHSU responded with a series of attempts, but Ellis again came up strong with saves against Isabelle Mull and Taylor Hill. Meanwhile, the Bearcats continued to press with shots from
Makenna West and
Julia Coacher, both of which were stopped by the Tigers' goalkeeper, Hadley Ostrander. Despite several opportunities for both squads, the first half ended scoreless, with the teams locked at 0-0.
The second half began with Northwest Missouri State capitalizing on their first significant opportunity. In the 53rd minute,
Addy Armstrong found the back of the net with an assist from Coacher, marking her first career goal and the game-winning goal, putting the home team ahead 1-0. Ellis was instrumental in maintaining the lead, saving multiple shots from the Tigers, including attempts from Mull and Hill.
As the half progressed, West extended the lead in the 76th minute with a goal assisted by
Abby Overbay, bringing the score to 2-0. The Bearcats' defense remained strong, with Ellis continuing to thwart FHSU's efforts, ensuring the home team secured the shutout. The half concluded with Northwest Missouri State holding a confident 2-0 lead.
Ellis recorded a shutout with 10 saves, including seven saves in the second half. This was her seventh shutout of the year and the 34th of her career. Armstrong scored the game-winning goal and finished with one shot on goal. West added a goal to the team's tally, converting one of her three shots. Coacher contributed with an assist while taking two shots on goal.
Northwest will return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. at home against Nebraska-Kearney.
