No. 4 Bronchos edge Bearcats in tense thriller, 3-2

EDMOND, Okla. — Central Oklahoma (18-1, 4-1 MIAA), ranked No. 4 in this week's AVCA Top 25, edged out Northwest Missouri State (6-8, 0-5 MIAA) in a tense five-set showdown at Hamilton Field House, winning 25-23, 25-18, 20-25, 13-25, 15-13.

Northwest Missouri State opened the first set with a point off an attack error from the Bronchos, setting the tone for a closely contested period. Kasidy Mohwinkle and Ella Caffery led the charge with several key kills, contributing to the team's efforts to stay within striking distance throughout the set. Despite a mid-set push by UCO, which saw them extend their lead to 17-9, Mohwinkle's offensive contributions helped to close the gap to 19-18. The Bearcats continued to fight back, leveling the score at 22-22 with a kill from Mohwinkle. However, UCO managed to edge out a win with a final kill by Kedron Burk, closing the set at 25-23 in favor of the home team.

The Bearcats began the second set with a series of assertive plays, highlighted by Gabrielle Gartner and Mohwinkle each delivering key kills, propelling the team to a 5-2 lead. The Bearcats maintained momentum with strong defensive efforts, including a block by Caffery and Kate Frakes, which contributed to a 10-4 advantage. However, UCO responded with a determined rally, narrowing the gap with a sequence of points, including service aces and kills from Sawyer Franz and Lindsey Houran. Despite Northwest's efforts to reclaim the lead through strategic plays from Frakes and Mohwinkle, who also tallied a career-best three service aces against the Bronchos, UCO capitalized on errors and maintained offensive pressure to close the set with a 25-18 victory.

Northwest Missouri State started the third set by establishing an early lead with a kill from Abby Bulthus, assisted by Caffery, to go up 1-0. Despite some back-and-forth exchanges and a few service errors, Northwest Missouri State managed to keep the score close, with Mohwinkle and Natalie Herrington contributing key kills to level the score at 11-11. Midway through the set, Northwest Missouri State shifted momentum with a service ace by Mohwinkle and continued to capitalize on UCO's errors. Strong offensive plays, particularly from Herrington and Bulthuis, extended their lead to 18-15, with Bulthus setting a career high with 14 kills. They maintained control as the set progressed. As the set drew to a close, Northwest Missouri State solidified their advantage with a series of successful attacks. Herrington's consistent performance, highlighted by multiple kills assisted by Caffery, helped secure the set with a final point on a UCO service error. Northwest Missouri State closed the set with a 25-20 victory over UCO.

Northwest Missouri State capitalized on momentum early in the fourth set with Bulthuis and Gartner leading the charge. After a tight start, Northwest Missouri State surged ahead with a key sequence including service aces from Ellery Luhring and consistent kills by Bulthuis, assisted by Caffery. This offensive push allowed Northwest to establish a 13-8 lead. UCO briefly responded but struggled to regain footing as Northwest Missouri State maintained pressure. Mohwinkle and Bulthuis continued to find success offensively, extending the lead to 17-9. A service ace from Frakes further widened the gap as they continued to leverage UCO's errors. The set concluded with Northwest Missouri State firmly in control, closing out the set on a decisive 11-4 run. A final service ace by Karsen VanScoy, who posted a career-high 20 digs, secured a 25-13 set win, reflecting a dominant performance in the closing moments.

The decisive fifth set saw Northwest Missouri State initially seizing control with a 4-0 run, highlighted by Gartner's kill and a block involving Herrington. UCO's service error allowed Northwest Missouri State to start strong. Caffery facilitated multiple scoring plays, including setting up kills for Gartner and Herrington. As the set progressed, Herrington and Bulthuis continued to add crucial points, maintaining a lead. However, UCO responded with a series of kills, eventually overtaking Northwest Missouri State's lead. Sydney Huck and Mikiah Perdue provided effective offensive plays, narrowing the gap and ultimately shifting the momentum. With UCO taking the final points, the set concluded with a narrow 15-13 victory for the home team.

Mohwinkle led the team with 17 kills, tying her career high, and recorded 20 digs, setting a new career high, contributing significantly to Northwest Missouri's defensive efforts. Caffery posted 44 assists and collected 19 digs, showcasing her dual role in both setting and defense. VanScoy added 20 digs, reinforcing the back row's stability throughout the match. Herrington had an efficient performance, achieving a .625 hitting percentage with 11 kills on 16 attempts.

The next challenge for Northwest Missouri State volleyball will take them on the road to face Arkansas Fort Smith. This matchup is set for Saturday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. in Fort Smith, Ark.
