Three Bearcats clock record-breaking times on day one at Washburn Open

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Northwest Missouri State men's and women's indoor track and field squads completed day one of the Washburn Open with three record-setting performances by Drew Atkins, Grant Bradley and Jadyn Barnes
 
Atkins shattered the 5,000-meter school record, previously set by Jhordan Ccope in 2019, with a runner-up finish, clocking in at 14:05.87. Atkins' time stands at No. 15 in Division II this season. Bradley rewrote the Northwest record books in the 3,000-meter run, posting a time of 7:59.82—the second-fastest in program history and the fifth-fastest in Div. II this season.
 
Barnes continued her dominance in the 600-yard run, setting a meet record with a winning time of 1:23.50.  Barnes previously set the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility record last season with a 1:23.10 performance at the Ichabod Invitational.
 
FIELD EVENTS
(M) High Jump: Jeremiah Rainey-Dunlap took fourth place with final height of 1.97 meters (6-05.50). 

(M) Triple Jump: David Parker II placed 17th with a best jump of 13.66 meters (44-09.00)
 
RUNNING EVENTS
(M) 60-meter Dash: Dominic Sedlacek sits in fourth third going into Saturday's finals. Sedlacek ran a blazing new provisional qualifying time of 6.76 (6.758), currently sitting at No. 21 in Div. II. The top five times in the event are fractioned by seven-hundredths of a second, as Fort Scott CC's Dekell Minor sits atop of the leaderboard at 6.70. 

(W) 60-meter Dash: Campbell Barta (7.71) and Lexie Gilbert each qualified for Saturday's final. Barta currently sits in 14th, as Gilbert stands at 20th. 

(M) 200-meter Dash: Joel Dos Santos ran the nation's tenth-fastest time of 21.39 to claim fourth place in the event. Dos Santos holds the school record of 21.27 (Feb. 25, 2024). 

(W) 200-meter Dash: Chloe Saenz posted the sixth-fastest time in Div. II with a second-place finish at 24.17. Melanie Roland (24.86) and Lexie Gilbert (24.91) took 12th and 14th, respectively. 

(M) 600-yard Run: Freshman Bentley St. John placed seventh in the event, crossing the line at 1:13.24. Christian Lanphier (1:14.08) and Zach Pittman (1:14.29) claimed the 15th and 17th positions, respectively. 

(W) 600-yard Run: Northwest controlled the field in the event, led by Jadyn Barnes who set a new meet record with a time of 1:23.50, which stands as the eighth-fastest time in Bearcat history. Marie Dea took third with a blazing time of 1:23.74, as Jaedy Commins took sixth at 1:25.55. Bailey Blake (1:25.94) rounded off the top 10 with an eighth-place finish. 
 
The men's and women's 3,000-meter runs featured Heat 4 today, while Heats 1-3 will take place Saturday. 

(M) 3000-meter Run: Grant Bradley and Nate Mueller delivered impressive performances against a field packed with Division I talent. The top eight times were good for meet records. Bradley battled Drake's Brogan Giffin in a tight race to the finish, in second, recording a time of 7:59.82. Bradley's time marked the fifth-fastest time in Division II this season and set a new school record. Mueller finished as the tenth-fastest competitor, crossing the line at 8:19.20, the fifth-fastest time recorded in school history. 

The Bearcats will have seven more runners compete in Heats 1-3 Saturday. 
 
W) 3000-meter Run: Heat 4 in the event featured Shelby Harris, who finished in 11th, clocking in at 10:48.69. 
Jessa Cassity and Amanda Seggerman will both compete in Heat 3 tomorrow. 

(M) 5000-meter Run: Along with Atkins' record-setting performance, Tyler Blay placed fifth with a provisional time of 14:21.82 – ranks No. 30 in Div. II.

Northwest will be back at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility for day two of the Washburn Open, resuming at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Feb. 1.
