Washburn stakes claim for No. 1 ranking by knocking off Northwest

TOPEKA, Kan. - The No. 2-ranked Washburn University Ichabods staked their claim for the No. 1 national ranking with a 96-66 victory over the visiting Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats Saturday at Lee Arena.

Washburn stayed perfect on the season by moving to 15-0 overall and 6-0 in MIAA play. Northwest fell to 4-11 overall and 2-4 in league action. Northwest had won nine straight games in Lee Arena before the Ichabods tallied a 30-point victory today. 

Northwest had three players reach double figures in scoring led by Trey Moala with 13 points and six rebounds. Marcus Glock posted 12 points and Byron Alexander was credited with 11 points. Moala went 6-of-11 from the floor. Glock knocked in both of his three-point attempts. Alexander made 5-of-8 shots from the floor. 

Washburn shot 60.0% from the floor by draining 39-of-65 shots. Northwest shot 38.6% (22-of-57). The Ichabods sank only 8-of-23 three-point shots (34.8%). Northwest buried 5-of-19 from distance. 

Northwest will be back in action next week with another two-game road trip to Nebraska-Kearney (Thursday, 7:30 p.m.) and Fort Hays State (Saturday, 4 p.m.).

NOTES: Washburn had lost to Northwest in seven straight matchups prior to today's contest ... Northwest is 3-2 on the road this season ... Washburn won the rebounding battle, 34-31 ... Northwest turned the ball over 18 times and dished out 14 assists ... Washburn had 18 assists and 12 turnovers ... Northwest had nine steals with Jack Ratigan tallying a team-high three thefts ... Northwest was 17-of-23 at the free throw line (73.9%) ... Washburn went 10-of-16 at the charity stripe (62.5%).
