Northwest volleyball takes down Spring Hill in 3-0 sweep

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Northwest Missouri State University volleyball squad recorded a 3-0 sweep of Spring Hill to begin Saturday's action at the Outback Invitational hosted by West Florida.

Northwest won by set scores of 25-18, 25-18 and 25-20. Northwest is 3-4 on the year, while Spring Hill is 1-6. It was Northwest's first 3-0 sweep for a win this season.

Natalie Laiolo recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 17 assists and 10 digs. Abby Brunssen hit .833 with 10 kills on 12 swings and did not commit a hitting error. Payton Kirchhoefer and Kasidy Mohwinkle tied for team-high honors with 12 kills each. Libero Kyah Luhring put up a team-best 16 digs in the triumph.

The Bearcats hit a smoldering .462 in the first set with 20 kills and two errors. Northwest was able to side out at 78% in the opening set. Mohwinkle and Kirchhoefer each tallied five first-set kills. There was one tie in the set and no lead changes with Northwest claiming a 25-18 triumph.

The Bearcats had a sideout percentage of 72% in the second set while hitting .276. Brunssen carried the weight in the second with a team-high five kills on six swings. The second set featured five ties and two lead changes as Northwest scored a 25-18 win.

Northwest finished off Spring Hill in the third and did not trail en route to a 25-20 victory. Northwest hit .188 with 17 kills and eight attack errors. The Bearcats were able to side out at 52% in the third. Mohwinkle tallied five kills on seven attacks in the final set.

Northwest will take on tournament host and No. 21-ranked West Florida later tonight at 7 p.m.
