EDMOND, Okla. - The Northeastern State University RiverHawks scored a 4-3 upset win over No. 20-ranked Northwest Missouri State University in the quarterfinals of the 2024 MIAA Women's Tennis Tournament held at Edmond Center Court.
The RiverHawks (10-7) will move on to play No. 2-seeded Missouri Western in the MIAA semifinals at 10 a.m. Saturday.
NSU gained a 1-0 lead by scoring two of three wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
The Bearcats gained victories at the first two singles matches from
Tessa Kwakernaak at No. 2 singles and
Laura Prieto Sieiro at No. 4 singles.
NSU ran off two straight singles wins to take a 3-2 advantage with a pair of three-set matches hanging in the balance.
Northwest's
Angela per Moreno came storming back to take a 6-7, 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles over NSU's Andrea Vargas.
However, NSU's Sandra Mari Marti withstood Northwest's Sofia PIgnataro at No. 3 singles with a 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 triumph to clinch the win for the RiverHawks.
Northwest is 21-4 on the season.
