EDMOND, Okla. - The Southeastern Oklahoma State University Savage Storm pulled off a 4-2 stunner over the No. 45-ranked and second-seeded Northwest Missouri State University men's tennis team in the quarterfinals of the MIAA/GAC Tournament.
The Savage Storm (19-8 overall) avenged a 4-0 dual loss to the Bearcats on March 15 with a victory Wednesday in the conference tournament.
The Savage Storm jumped out to a 1-0 lead after capturing victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Northwest put up a pair of wins in singles from No. 1
Andrea Zamurri and No. 3
Mason Meier. However, the Savage Storm gained wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles to take the dual from the Bearcats. The Savage Storm scored a pair of three-set victories to stir the win at No. 5 singles from Luke Tinnock over
Fillippo Piranomonte (6-3, 1-6, 7-5) and at No. 6 singles from Luis Ching against
Martin Sanchez (3-6, 6-4, 6-0).
Northwest is 13-7 on the season and will await its postseason opportunity. Northwest was ranked No. 4 in the latest NCAA Central Region rankings. The top four teams qualify for the NCAA Central Region Tournament.
