Bearcat softball has 8-game win streak snapped at UCM

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State University softball team had its eight-game win streak snapped as the Central Missouri Jennies gained a doubleheader split with the Bearcats on Saturday.

Northwest scored a 2-1 win in game one. UCM tallied a 5-0 triumph in game two. Northwest is 28-24 overall and 15-11 in MIAA play. The Bearcats have locked up the No. 5 seed for the 2024 MIAA Tournament.

GAME ONE
Northwest extended its winning streak to eight straight games with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Bearcat starting pitcher Jadyn Streigle worked the opening three innings and allowed three hits and one run. Reliever Olivia Moyer pitched one-hit ball over the final four innings to claim the win to move to 5-4. Moyer struck out three and walked two.

Streigle yielded a sac fly in the second inning that allowed UCM to take a 1-0 lead. It is her 15th appearance this season that Streigle has allowed one run or less.

Northwest drew even in the fifth. Sophie Mayhugh singled to lead off the inning. Grace Lubben entered as a pinch runner. Lubben moved up to second on a sac bunt from Lela Bryant. Lillie Filger delivered a two-out, RBI-single to left field to knot the contest at 1-1.

The Bearcats took their first lead of the game in the sixth. Skylar Pieper led off with a double to left field. She scampered home on an RBI-single up the middle from Lauren Gray to stake the Bearcats to a 2-1 advantage.

Filger recorded a two-hit game to open up the doubleheader. It is Filger's 25th multi-hit game this season.

Gray has tallied nine multi-hit contests this season.

GAME TWO
Northwest registered nine hits, while Central Missouri posted five hits as the Jennies recorded a 5-0 victory. The loss snapped Northwest's eight-game win streak.

The game was scoreless until the Jennies scratched across two unearned runs of Bearcat starter Hayden Simmons in the bottom of the fourth.

The Bearcats loaded the bases in the top of fifth and were looking to strike back. However, Skylar Pieper lined into a line-drive double play to end the Northwest scoring threat.

Breck Dickey relieved Simmons in the fifth and the Jennies were able to tack on another run to take a 3-0 lead.

Northwest loaded the bases with one out in the sixth but had back-to-back strikeouts to end that scoring opportunity.

UCM's Morgan Shields popped a one-out, two-run homer off Cassidy Paulson to lift the Jennies to a 5-0 lead in the sixth.

Pieper added a one-out double in the seventh for her 15th multi-hit games this season. But the Jennies retired the Bearcats to score the 5-0 victory.

Lela Bryant collected her sixth multi-hit game this year.

Filger has posted 79 hits this season, which ranks as the second-most for a Bearcat in school history. Filger trails only Kendra Smith's 83-hit total in the 2000 season.
