Moyer tosses shutout in game one; Bearcats sweep Cardinals in midweek doubleheader

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State University softball team swept the William Jewell Cardinals in its midweek non-conference matchup Wednesday at the Bearcat Softball Field.

Now on a five-game winning streak, Northwest improves to 25-23 overall. William Jewell drops to 23-31.

GAME ONE
The Bearcats came out with a 3-0 victory in game one, thanks to a stellar pitching performance by starting pitcher Olivia Moyer.

Avery Mayberry broke the scoring open in the third with a solo shot to left to put the Bearcats up 1-0.

In the home half of the sixth, Lauren Gray provided a two-out single to give the Bearcats a baserunner. Grace Lubben pinch-ran for Gray. Abby Nolte then doubled to the right center to put runners on second and third. Omara Love came up to the plate and rocketed a double to left center to bring in both Lubben and Nolte to add a pair of insurance runs, 3-0.

Moyer (4-4) hung another zero in the seventh to secure a 3-0 shutout in game one. Moyer worked seven innings, allowed only three hits, and struck out six.

GAME TWO
The Bearcats completed the doubleheader sweep with a 9-4 victory in game two.

In the first, Lillie Filger started game two with a bunt single and was later advanced to second on a wild pitch. The next batter, Gaige Pinkerton singled to right center to put runners on the corners. Amid a huge inning for Northwest, Nolte singled to score Filger from third, Love then singled to score Pinkerton, and Sophie Mayhugh singled to right, scoring Pieper. Lela Bryant reached on a fielder's choice to round off a four-run, five-hit inning for the Bearcats.

The Cardinals scored one on a bases-loaded walk before Starting pitcher Cassidy Paulson was relieved for Breck Dickey in the third. Paulson worked 2 2/3 innings and allowed four hits and one earned run. William Jewell ended the inning with two runs on two hits to make it 4-2.

Northwest had a quick answer in the third. Mayhugh doubled, followed by a Bryant single to put runners at the corners with one out. Annie Gahan hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2 after three complete.

Back-and-forth the two teams went, William Jewell cut Northwest's lead down to one with a two-run shot in the fourth.

Gahan collected her second and third RBI on a single to give the 'Cats a 7-4 cushion entering the top half of the sixth.

Love also collected her second and third RBI of the game with a two-out single to bring the score to 9-4.

Hayden Simmons came in to pitch for Dickey to close the door on the Cardinals in the seventh. Simmons struck out all three batters faced.

Dickey (6-5) earned the win by going 3 1/3 and allowed two hits and two earned runs while striking out two.

The Bearcats will head to Lincoln on Friday, April 26, and Central Missouri on Saturday, April 27, to complete MIAA play.
