Softball closes regular season with a six-game slate

The Northwest Missouri State University softball team will head into the final week of the regular season with six games on its slate.
 
Northwest (23-23 overall, 12-10) owns the league's longest active winning streak at three in a row and will look to secure its spots in the MIAA Tournament.
 
Northwest will play host to William Jewell Wednesday at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader. The Bearcats will then head to Lincoln on Friday and Central Missouri on Saturday to complete MIAA play.
 
The Bearcats sit alone in fifth place in the league standings as 12-10. The top 10 teams in the league will qualify for the 2024 MIAA Softball Tournament set for May 1-5 at Gerry Pinkston Stadium in Edmond, Okla.
 
Northwest split a two-game set with No. 9-ranked Pittsburg State on Friday and became the first. MIAA squad to shutout the Gorillas this season. Northwest followed that up with a sweep of Missouri Southern to run its win streak to three in a row.
 
William Jewell is 23-29 overall and 6-18 in the GLVC this season. Northwest and William Jewell are tied 5-5 in the all-time series between the two programs. The Bearcats and Cardinals split a non-conference series last season in Liberty, Mo.
 
Lincoln is 13-31 overall and 4-18 in its last season of MIAA play. The Blue Tigers will be moving to the GLVC next season. The Blue Tigers have dropped five of their last six MIAA games heading into Friday's matchup with the Bearcats. Northwest leads the all-time series vs. Lincoln, 41-2. Northwest has won 12 straight games against Lincoln. Lincoln's last win against Northwest came March 25, 2016 in a 3-2 decision.
 
Central Missouri is 21-24 overall and 10-12 in MIAA action. The Jennies have lost four straight games entering this week's play. The all-time series between Northwest and Central Missouri is deadlocked at 64-64. The squads have split doubleheaders in each of the last two seasons.
 
Head coach Naomi Tellez's team is batting .290 this season. Northwest is 20-5 when it out-hits the opposition and 2-15 when the opponents out-hit the Bearcats. Northwest is 18-1 when leading after six innings. Northwest is 21-3 when leading after four innings. The Bearcats are 18-1 when limiting the opponent to two runs or less. The Bearcats are 20-8 when scoring first.
 
Lillie Filger leads the squad and ranks No. 2 in the MIAA and No. 37 in the nation with a .443 batting average. Filger leads the Bearcats with 70 hits, 35 runs scored and 83 total bases. Filger ranks tied for No. 2 in the MIAA in hits (70). She also leads the team with 22 multi-hit games. Filger is 41-of-76 (.539) this season when leading off an inning. Filger is 7-of-9 in stolen base attempts. Filger has tallied 17 of her hits with two outs in an inning. She has tallied a pair of four-hit games and nine games of three hits or more this season. Filger's 70 hits ranks fourth-most in a single season by a Bearcat softball performer. Filger also tallied 66 hits in the 2023 season.

Abby Nolte is batting .278 with 37 hits and 25 runs. She is tied for the team lead with seven home runs, which ranks tied for 10th in the MIAA. She has tallied a team-best tying 28 RBI. Nolte is 10-of-13 (.769) with a runner on third and less than two outs. Nolte has posted a team-best five hits (5-of-11) with the bases loaded. Nolte tied the Bearcat single-game record in RBI with seven at Henderson State. Nolte tied a mark set by Annie Melius (vs. Washburn – April 28, 1987), and Abigail Gilson (vs. Central Missouri – April 27, 2017).

Skylar Pieper is batting .304 with 42 hits and ranks third on the team with 22 RBI. She is tied for the squad lead with 13 extra-base hits (7 doubles, 2 triples, 4 homers). Pieper has recorded a team-high tying 12 two-out RBI. She has posted 13 multi-hit games and six multi-RBI contests. Pieper is tied for fifth in the MIAA having been hit by seven pitches.
 
Lauren Gray is batting .278 with 30 hits, 18 runs scored. Gray is tied for the team lead in home runs (7) and RBI (28). Gray has posted a team-high eight multi-RBI games. She ranks second on the team with six doubles. Gray has seven multi-hit games this season. Gray became the first Bearcat to hit three home runs in a game when she launched three in the season-opening win over Ouachita Baptist. Gray hit two solo homers and a grand slam against the Tigers. She is one of 17 NCAA Div. II players to have hit three home runs in a game this season.
 
Sophie Mayhugh leads the Bearcats with 22 walks. She is batting .225 with 20 hits and ranks fourth on the team with 21 RBI. Mayhugh has six multi-RBI games.
 
Avery Mayberry is batting .265 with 22 hits and nine runs scored. She has driven in nine as well. Mayberry has tallied five multi-hit games.
 
Annie Gahan is hitting .261 with 24 hits and 20 RBI. Gahan is tied for the team with 12 two-out RBI. Gahan hit .375 with six RBI to help Northwest a 3-1 weekend including a 5-0 win over No. 9-ranked Pittsburg State. Gahan delivered a two-out, three-run homer in the second inning of Northwest's 3-1 win over Missouri Southern. Gahan then came through with a two-run single in the second game vs. MSSU to give Northwest a 2-1 victory over the Lions.
 
Omara Love is batting .314 with 22 hits and 10 runs scored. She is 4-of-5 in stolen bases. She has posted four multi-hit games. Love has reached base in six straight games entering this week's slate of games.
 
Sophomore pitcher Jadyn Streigle is 9-9 on the season with a 2.36 earned run average. She leads the team with 10 complete games. She has made 17 starts and has struck out 41 batters in 107 innings.
 
Senior pitcher Hayden Simmons is 6-2 with a 2.68 earned run average. She has struck out 56 batters and allowed only 18 earned runs. Simmons tossed a one-hit, eight-strikeout shutout of Wayne State. Simmons tied a career-high with eight punchouts and walked only one in her first shutout of the season.
 
Freshman pitcher Olivia Moyer has made seven starts and sits at 3-4 with a 4.84 ERA. She has appeared in 13 games and has pitched 50 2/3 innings. She has struck out 38 batters. Moyer tied her season-high with five strikeouts in a 5-2 win over Newman (March 22).
 
Senior pitcher Breck Dickey is 5-5 with a 4.25 ERA this season. She leads the squad with 57 strikeouts in 57 2/3 innings pitched. Dickey has tallied 34 career wins, which ranks tied for No. 9 in program history. Dickey ranks No. 2 on Northwest's all-time strikeout list with 420 career punchouts. Dickey also ranks No. 5 in appearances (104) and No. 8 in innings pitched (459.1). Dickey struck out a career-high 14 batters in a 4-1 win over Nebraska-Kearney.
 
Dickey earned MIAA Pitcher of the Week honors on April 22. Dickey threw a two-hit shutout vs. No. 9-ranked Pittsburg State and then followed it up with a nine-out save Saturday in a victory over Missouri Southern. Dickey pitched 10 innings with a 0.00 ERA. She allowed two hits and struck out nine batters in two appearances as Northwest went 3-1 on the weekend. She is the only MIAA pitcher to hurl a shutout this season against the Gorillas.
