No. 24 Washburn sweeps Northwest in softball action

TOPEKA, Kan. – The No. 24-ranked Washburn University Ichabods gained a doubleheader sweep of the Northwest Missouri State University softball team on Friday.
 
Washburn scored wins by the count of 3-1 and 6-0 over Northwest. The Ichabods are 28-10 overall and 9-5 in league play. The Bearcats are 16-18 overall and 5-5 in MIAA play.
 
GAME ONE
Skylar Pieper went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI-triple but the Ichabods were able to post a 3-1 victory in the opener.
 
Pieper laced her RBI-triple to right-center to score Omara Love for the first run of the game in the third inning.
 
The Ichabods took advantage of a throwing error in the fourth to level the score at 1-1.
 
Washburn tallied a sac fly in the fifth to take the lead and added an insurance run in the sixth for a 3-1 advantage.
 
Bearcat starting pitcher Jadyn Streigle went the distance and gave up three runs (one earned). She allowed seven hits and struck out four. She did not walk a batter. It is Streigle's team-best sixth complete game of the season. Streigle is 6-6 on the year as she took the loss.
 
GAME TWO
Northwest was held to three hits in the nightcap as Washburn scored a 6-0 win.
 
The Ichabods's Jaycee Ginter hit a one-out, three-run homer in the first to give the home squad an early 3-0 advantage over the Bearcats.
 
Washburn added a three-hit, three-run rally in the fifth inning to push the score to 6-0.
 
The Bearcats got hits from Omara Love, Avery Mayberry and Gaige Pinkerton. Love and Mayberry each had doubles for their hits.
 
Starting pitcher Olivia Moyer pitched a complete game and took the loss to fall to 3-3. It was the third complete game of the year for Moyer. She allowed eight hits and six runs (all earned). She struck out three Ichabod batters.
 
Northwest will be back in action Saturday at noon with a doubleheader at Emporia State.
