Northwest softball returns to MIAA play at Newman, No. 9 Central Oklahoma

The Northwest Missouri State University softball team will head back into MIAA play this weekend with doubleheader matchups at Newman (Friday) and No. 9-ranked Central Oklahoma (Saturday).
 
The Bearcats are 14-14 overall and 3-1 in MIAA play. Newman is 13-15 overall an d 1-3 in MIAA action. Central Oklahoma is 22-6 overall and 4-0 in league play.
 
Head coach Naomi Tellez's team is batting .313 this season. Northwest is 13-5 when it out-hits the opposition. Northwest has enjoyed a 21-5 scoring advantage in the fifth inning of games.
 
Lillie Filger leads the squad and ranks No. 5 in the MIAA with a .446 batting average. She also leads the team with 15 multi-hit games this season. Filger is 25-of-45 (.556) this season when leading off an inning. She also leads the team with four hits with the bases loaded. Filger is 6-of-8 in stolen base attempts. Filger leads the Bearcats with 45 hits and 25 runs scored. Filger ranks No. 3 in the MIAA in hits (28).
 
Skylar Pieper leads the team with 14 two-out base hits. She also tops the squad in two-out RBI (10). Pieper is 9-of-14 (.643) when leading off an inning. Pieper is second on the team with four home runs. Pieper is batting .369 with 31 hits, 20 runs scored and 18 RBI. Pieper has been hit by five pitches, which ranks tied for fourth in the MIAA. Pieper ranks third on the team with 10 multi-hit games.
 
Alexis Brown leads the team with 21 hits with runners on base. She also tops the squad with 15 hits with runners in scoring position. Brown is 7-of-8 in the stolen base department. Brown is batting .371 with 36 hits. Brown has produced 11 multi-hit games.
 
Sophie Mayhugh hit the first two home runs of her career in Northwest's 6-1 win over Fort Hays State. Mayhugh entered the game with 103 career at-bats and no home runs. Mayhugh connected on a pair of two-run home runs vs. the Tigers. Mayhugh is batting .295 and ranks tied for third on the team in RBI (17). Mayhugh leads the team with five multi-RBI contests.
 
Lauren Gray is batting .288 with 19 hits and 11 runs scored. She has driven in a team-best 18 runs. Gray is tied for seventh in the MIAA in home runs (5). She has produced four multi-RBI games. Gray became the first Bearcat to hit three home runs in a game when she launched three in the season-opening win over Ouachita Baptist. Gray hit two solo homers and a grand slam against the Tigers. She is one of eight NCAA Div. II players to have hit three home runs in a game this season.
 
Abby Nolte is batting .256 with 21 hits, 13 runs and 17 RBI. Nolte tied the Bearcat single-game record in RBI with seven at Henderson State. Nolte tied a mark set by Annie Melius (vs. Washburn – April 28, 1987), and Abigail Gilson (vs. Central Missouri – April 27, 2017).

Sophomore pitcher Jadyn Streigle is 5-5 on the season with a 2.10 earned run average. She has allowed only six extra-base hits out of her 53 hits given up. She leads the team with five complete games.
 
Senior pitcher Hayden Simmons is 4-1 with a 3.23 earned run average. She has struck out 28 batters and allowed only 12 earned runs. Simmons tossed a one-hit, eight-strikeout shutout of Wayne State. Simmons tied a career-high with eight punchouts and walked only one in her first shutout of the season.
 
Senior pitcher Breck Dickey is 3-4 with a 5.62 ERA this season. She leads the squad with 46 strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings pitched. Dickey has tallied 32 career wins, which ranks No. 10 in program history. Dickey ranks No. 2 on Northwest's all-time strikeout list with 409 career punchouts. Dickey also ranks No. 5 in appearances (98) and No. 8 in innings pitched (439.0). Dickey struck out a career-high 14 batters in a 4-1 win over Nebraska-Kearney.
