The Northwest Missouri State University softball squad will extend its homestand with two sets of non-conference doubleheaders against MSU Moorhead and Bemidji State this weekend.

The Bearcats (12-10 overall) are coming off a 3-1 weekend of MIAA action against Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State. Northwest split a pair with UNK before taking both contests against FHSU.

MSU Moorhead enters the week with a record of 8-6. The Dragons are making their way through MIAA opponents this week with doubleheaders against Lincoln (Wednesday), Central Missouri (Thursday), Missouri Western (Friday) and Northwest (Saturday).

Bemidji State begins this week's slate of games with an overall mark of 6-11. Bemidji State will play at Central Missouri (Friday) and Missouri Western (Saturday) before taking on the Bearcats in Maryville on Sunday.

Head coach
Naomi Tellez's team ranks No. 4 in the MIAA in batting average (.329). Northwest is 11-4 when it out-hits the opposition. Northwest has out-scored its opponents, 37-23, in the first two innings of contests. Northwest is 10-1 when leading after six innings.

Lillie Filger leads the squad and ranks No. 5 in the MIAA with a .432 batting average. She also leads the team with 11 multi-hit games this season. Filger is 19-of-34 (.559) this season when leading off an inning. She is tied for the team lead with three hits with the bases loaded. Filger is 4-of-6 in stolen base attempts. Filger leads the Bearcats with 35 hits and 22 runs scored. Filger ranks No. 4 in the MIAA in hits (28) and No. 10 in runs scored (20). Filger enters this weekend's action riding a six-game hitting streak.

Skylar Pieper leads the team with 13 two-out base hits. She also tops the squad in two-out RBI (10). Pieper is 9-of-12 (.750) when leading off an inning. Pieper is second on the team with four home runs. Pieper is batting .418 with 28 hits, 17 runs scored and 15 RBI. She has drawn a team-high 10 walks. She ranks No. 5 in the MIAA in on-base percentage (.518). Pieper ranks No. 10 in the league in OPS (1.190). Pieper has been hit by five pitches, which ranks tied for third in the MIAA. Pieper ranks tied for second on the team with 10 multi-hit games.

Alexis Brown leads the team with 19 hits with runners on base. She also tops the squad with 14 hits with runners in scoring position. Brown is 6-of-7 in the stolen base department. Brown is batting .383 with 31 hits. Brown has produced 10 multi-hit games.

Sophie Mayhugh hit the first two home runs of her career in Northwest's 6-1 win over Fort Hays State. Mayhugh entered the game with 103 career at-bats and no home runs. Mayhugh connected on a pair of two-run home runs vs. the Tigers. Mayhugh is batting .306 and ranks second on the team in RBI (17). Mayhugh leads the team with five multi-RBI contests.

Gaige Pinkerton is in the midst of a six-game hitting streak. Pinkerton is batting .303 with 10 hits in 33 at-bats.

Annie Gahan is batting .324 with 11 hits. Gahan has three multi-hit games.

Lauren Gray is batting .298 with 17 hits and 10 runs scored. She has driven in a team-best 18 runs. Gray is tied for fifth in the MIAA in home runs (5). She has produced four multi-RBI games. Gray became the first Bearcat to hit three home runs in a game when she launched three in the season-opening win over Ouachita Baptist. Gray hit two solo homers and a grand slam against the Tigers. She is one of two NCAA Div. II players to have hit three home runs in a game this season, joining Francis Marion's Taylor Watford.

Abby Nolte has been coming through with seven hits in 10 at-bats with a runner on third and less than two outs. Nolte is batting .279 with 19 hits, 10 runs and 15 RBI. Nolte tied the Bearcat single-game record in RBI with seven at Henderson State. Nolte tied a mark set by Annie Melius (vs. Washburn – April 28, 1987), and Abigail Gilson (vs. Central Missouri – April 27, 2017). She is one of four NCAA Div. II players with seven RBI in a game this season.

Hayden Simmons is 3-0 with a team-best 1.75 earned run average. She has struck out 24 batters and allowed only five earned runs. Simmons tossed a one-hit, eight-strikeout shutout of Wayne State. Simmons tied a career-high with eight punchouts and walked only one in her first shutout of the season.

Breck Dickey is 3-3 with a 4.36 ERA this season. She leads the squad with 45 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings pitched. Dickey has tallied 32 career wins, which ranks No. 10 in program history. Dickey struck out a career-high 14 batters in a 4-1 win over Nebraska-Kearney.
