Bearcats sting Hornets, 7-3, in home debut

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State baseball squad secured a 7-3 win over the Emporia State Hornets in its home debut. Senior pitcher Quinn Mason earned the win with a new career-high 11 strikeouts.

Northwest picked its first MIAA opening win for the first time since the 2021 season.

Ryan Williams extended his hitting streak to eight in a row with two hits against the Hornets. Caden Diel also posted his 20th multi-hit game of his Bearcat career.

Quinn Mason controlled the defensive side for the 'Cats, going 6.2 innings pitched. Mason only allowed six hits, while striking out eleven Hornet batters.

The Bearcats (7-5 overall, 1-0 MIAA) put up six out of their seven runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Emporia State's Logan Myers led off the game with a single to the right side to set the tone for the Hornets. Northwest's Quinn Mason immediately took control of the game, retiring the next three batters. The Bearcats fired on all cylinders in the bottom of the first as Cole Slibowski reached base on a throwing error by the Hornet third basemen. Shortly after, Diel doubled to right center to bring in Slibowski to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead. Trey Morris then roped a single to left to bring in Diel. The bats didn't stop as Jacob Selock reached on a fielder's choice to bring in Williams. Parker Griffith joined the action, hitting the right-center gap for a double, bringing in a pair of Bearcat runners. Another error by the Emporia State scored Selock to give the 'Cats an early 6-0 lead at the end of the first.

Jake Ciafullo was called in after Mason's day was done, striking out one batter in 1.2 innings pitched.

All zeros until the seventh inning, as Diel bunted to force a throwing error by the Hornet catcher, scoring Slibowski. Northwest held a 7-0 lead heading into the ninth.

Emporia State attempted a comeback bid in the top of the ninth as the Hornets scratched across three runs on five hits. Northwest skipper Darin Loe made the call to the bullpen to bring in the southpaw, Jacob Gajic, to seal the deal for the Bearcats.

Mason was credited with the win, as Gajic posted another save, bringing his career total to 11.

The Hornets drop to 7-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

The two teams will match up again for game two of the series at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
