Bearcats fueled by record-setting performances at Mel Tjeerdsma Classic

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State indoor track and field teams began the 2024-25 season with record-setting performances on Saturday, including multiple top 10 individual finishes. 

Maxime Touron highlighted the men's 800-meter run, setting a new Hughes Fieldhouse record and breaking his own meet and school records at the Mel Tjeerdsma Classic. Freshman Keith Griffin III also shined, setting a new school record in the men's 300-meter dash.

Competing as an unattached runner, Tiffany Hughey delivered a record-breaking performance in the women's 600-yard run, smashing both the meet and Hughes Fieldhouse records to take first place. Hughey clocked in at a personal-best time of 1:21.30 in the event. 

Field Events
(M) Long Jump: Two freshmen competed in the men's long jump competition, Wyatt Garner and David Parker II. Garner took 6th place with a jump of 6.69 meters (21-11.50), as Parker II placed 21st with a leap of 5.84 meters (19-02.00). 

(W) Long Jump: Freshman Campbell Barta took 6th place, leaping 5.46 meters (17-11.00), as Grace Hill recorded a 4.98-meter jump, placing 15th. 

(W) Shot Put: Luisarys Toledo threw the shot put for the first time since the 2022 MIAA Indoor Championships, as she took the Pentathlon crown (12.98m). Today, Toledo placed 6th with a throw of 12.01 meters (39-05.00). Allie Poage placed 28th with a throw of 9.23 meters (30-03-50). 

(M) Triple Jump: Freshman David Parker II gained a fourth-place finish with a jump of 13.30 meters (43-07.75). 

(W) Weight Throw: Alli Poage placed 21st among 47 athletes, launching 12.27 meters (40-03.25), tying her career-best distance. 

Running Events
(M) 60-meter Dash: Quinn Gruver was Northwest's highest-place finisher in 16th, crossing the line at a new personal-best time of 7.12. Freshman Wyatt Garner crossed the line at 7.20, taking 25th place. 

(W) 60-meter Dash: Nine Bearcats competed in the event, four qualified for finals. Newcomer Campbell Barta recorded the second-fastest qualifying time of 7.64 – fourth-fastest time in Northwest history. Jaurdin Mallory ran a personal best time of 7.82 in her qualifying heat. 

Barta avenged her qualifying time, placing 3rd, claiming a Division II provisional time of 7.61 – fourth-fastest time in school history. Right behind Barta was Gilbert in 4th place at 7.66 – sixth-fastest in school history. Jadyn Barnes (7.78) and Mallory (7.86), placed 7th and 8th, respectively. 

(W) 60-meter Hurdles: Grace Hill was the lone Bearcat to qualify for finals, sprinting to a career-best 9.16 qualifying time. Hannah Hatzenbuehler (9.58) and newcomer Millie Wempen (9.85) placed 12th and 15th, respectively.
Hill took fourth place in the finals heat, clocking in at 9.05. 

(M) 200-meter Dash: Prince Griffin claimed runner-up with a time of 21.41. Griffin's time now sits at No. 4 in the Northwest record book. Gavyn Monday placed 5th with a time of 21.87. 

(W) 200-meter Dash: Lexie Gilbert took the event crown with a time of 25.03, two tenths ahead of the second-place finisher. Hallie Henfling placed 8th, crossing the finish line at 26.07. Jaedy Commins (26.33) and Courtney Kiley (26.35) finished in the 14th and 15th positions. 

(M) 300-meter Dash: Freshman Keith Griffin III secured a school record time of 34.47, claiming 2nd in the event. Griffin III beat out teammate Gavyn Monday's school record time of 34.51 set last season (12/2/23). 

(W) 300-meter Dash: Chloe Saenz and Melanie Roland went one and two in the event. Saenz clocked in at a personal-best time of 39.15, marking the third-fastest time in the Northwest record books. Roland crossed the line at 39.17, sitting behind Saenz as the fourth-fastest Bearcat in the event. 

(M) 600-yard Run: Christian Lanphier claimed 3rd place, clocking in at 1:13.43, as Juan Hernandez finished inside the top 10, placing 8th with a time of 1:15.31. 

(W) 600-yard Run: Tiffany Hughey ran as an unattached runner, yet shattered meet and fieldhouse records, claiming the top spot in the event. Hughey crossed the line at 1:21.30, setting a new personal-best time. 

Freshman Marie Dea finished behind Hughey with a time of 1:23.36, sixth-fastest time in Northwest history. Federica Lega (1:26.65) and Bailey Blake (1:26.84), finished back-to-back in the 5th and 6th spots. 

(M) 800-meter Run: Maxime Touron broke the Mel Tjeerdsma meet record last season yet reset his record today crossing the line at a school-record time of 1:48.73, also setting a new Hughes Fieldhouse record. 

Freshmen Bentley St. John claimed 8th with a time of 1:54.88, as Andres Kemper also recorded a top 10 finish, placing 10th at 1:56.92. 

(M) 3,000-meter Run: Barnabe Gabillet finished in 3rd place, running an impressive time of 8:35.85. 

(W) 3,000-meter Run: Lou Maquaire placed 4th, behind a trio of St. Mary (Kan.), who all recorded times that broke the previous meet record. Maquaire crossed the line at 10:32.22, 

(M) 5,000-meter Run: A quartet of Bearcat freshmen competed in the 5000m run, each placing inside the top 20. Nick Kilonzo led the group, crossing the line at 15:40.25 in 11th place. John Langill took 13th, finishing in 15:42.04, as Owen Wise placed 15th at 15:43.85. Elijah Dix rounded off the Bearcats in 20th, crossing at 15:57.09. 

(M) 4x400-meter Relay: Christian Lanphier, Bentley St. John, Maxime Touron and Keith Griffin III completed the 4x400M relay sweep with a first-place finish, crossing the line at 3:19.10. 

(W) 4x400-meter Relay: The 4x400M relay team consisting of Jadyn Barnes, Marie Dea, Anjelena Carder and Melanie Roland claimed first place with a Division II provisional time of 3:46.22.
