WICHITA, Kan. – Junior forward
Margaret Madden netted her first two career goals, leading the Northwest Missouri State University women's soccer team to a 2-0 road victory over the Newman University Jets at Wilkins Field.
Northwest (4-2-4, 2-1-1 MIAA) finishes its road trip with a win against Newman today. Newman now sits at 0-9-1 overall and 0-3 in the MIAA.
The Bearcats came out strong to start the match, firing off eight shots within the first 25 minutes of action. Madden began in the 43rd minute, scoring her first goal of the match with an assist from
Abby Overbay, giving the Bearcats a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. Northwest dominated the first half offensively, outshooting Newman 11-to-3 and earning the only corner kick. Out of the 11 total shots, just three of those attempts were on target.
In the 82nd minute, a long pass to
Makenna West set up Madden, who scored her second goal, securing the Bearcats' fourth win of the season.
Northwest managed to put together a season-high 21 shots and matched its season-best of nine on target (three times).
Ekaterina Theoharidis led the way with a game-high five shots (two on-goal), while
Adell Gore tallied three shots (two on-goal). Defensively, Northwest held Newman to eight total shots and a season-low two on goal, while also preventing the Jets from earning any corner kicks.
Goalkeeper
Lily Ellis secured her fourth shutout of the season - 25th of her career, which ties her for fifth among active NCAA Division II goalkeepers. Ellis already achieved the Northwest shutout record against Central Oklahoma last season, but is still adding on to her total this season. Ellis tallied two saves today, boosting her career total to 222.
