Bearcats struggle in 3-0 setback to Ichabods

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn University Ichabods gained a 3-0 victory over the Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team in Lee Arena Tuesday night.
 
Washburn won by set scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-17 to stay perfect at home this season in four matches. Washburn moves to 17-4 overall and 8-3 in MIAA play. Northwest dips to 12-9 overall and 6-5 in league matches. Washburn avenged a 3-2 loss to Northwest in Bearcat Arena on Sept. 27.
 
Northwest produced a season-low 25 kills, while Washburn put down 45 kills in the three-set win. The Ichabods levied 11 service aces, while the Bearcats secured two service aces.
 
Northwest was having its way in the opening set with a 13-10 lead. However, Washburn ignited and sped past the Bearcats with a 15-4 spurt to claim the first set, 25-17. Northwest committed seven attack errors and hit .065, while Washburn hit .194 with 11 kills and five errors in the opening set.
 
The Ichabods continued their torrid play in the second set by claiming a 25-14 triumph for a 2-0 lead. Washburn hit Northwest with five service aces in the second set. Washburn scored the first five points of the set and increased the margin to 15-4 en route to the triumph. Washburn hit .412 with 17 kills and three attack errors on 34 swings in the second set. Northwest had eight kills and one error with a .280 hitting effort.
 
Washburn blitzed the Bearcats in set three by scoring the first seven points on its way to a match-clinching 25-17 win.
 
Payton Kirchhoefer led the Bearcats with eight kills. Kyah Luhring produced a team-high 17 digs. Abby Brunssen gained a team-high four blocks.
 
Northwest returns to play Wednesday at Emporia State with a 6 p.m. start at White Auditorium in Emporia, Kan.
