Women's tennis captures MIAA regular season crown with win at UCO

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - The Northwest Missouri State University women's tennis team clinched the MIAA regular season title with a 5-2 dual win Saturday at the University of Central Oklahoma.

Northwest captured its 10th straight dual victory this spring. Northwest has won 11 of its 14 matches since March 1. The Bearcat are 16-3 overall and 7-0 in MIAA play.

Women's Tennis 2023 MIAA Regular Season ChampionsIt is Northwest's 13th MIAA regular season crown under the direction of head coach Mark Rosewell. It is Northwest's first regular season MIAA title since 2010. 

Northwest took a 1-0 lead when it gained the doubles point. Northwest dropped the No. 1 doubles match, but bounced back to score wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Northwest's No. 2 doubles team of Vera Alenicheva and Tessa Kwakernaak notched a 6-3 win over UCO's Pete Komada and Nefeli Zafeiri. Northwest's No. 3 doubles pairing of Tyffaine Pais and Angela Per Moreno secured a 6-4 win over UCO's Tizia Brocks and Taylor Conway.

Northwest locked up the dual win by capturing four of the hotly contested singles matches. Alenicheva and Kwakernaak recorded a pair of three-set victories to fuel the Bearcat victory.

Alenicheva took down UCO's Blythe Buntrock at No. 1 singles, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3. Alenicheva trailed 3-0 in the deciding set before running off six straight games to earn the win.

Kwakernaak posted a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over UCO's Zafeiri at No. 3 singles.

Per Moreno earned a 6-0, 7-6 win over UCO's Brocks at No. 5 singles.

Carolina Lima De Oliveira gained a 7-5, 6-3 victory over UCO's Karyna Yurchenko at No. 6 singles.
