Southern Nazarene stuns three-time defending national champions, 61-57

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The No. 15-ranked Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm scored a stunning 61-57 victory over the three-time defending national champion Northwest Missouri State University men's basketball team in the second regional semifinal of the 2023 NCAA Division II Tournament in Bearcat Arena.

The Crimson Storm snapped Northwest's 18-game NCAA tournament winning streak by shooting 59.5% from the field, including 62.5% of its second-half shots. SNU knocked in 15-of-24 from the floor in the final 20 minutes to end the Bearcats's season.

The Bearcats held a seven-point halftime lead but saw that slip away as the Crimson Storm out-scored them in the second half, 36-25. SNU took a four-point lead with 7:28 to play for its largest lead of the contest.

Northwest re-took the lead at 54-53 on a bucket in the lane by junior Luke Waters on a pass from senior Diego Bernard with 3:39 left. SNU's Mo Wilson II tipped in a missed shot to give the lead back to the Crimson Storm with 3:10 to play. SNU post player Nick Davis tallied his 14th and 15th points of the game on a shot wtih 1:07 left to push the lead to three.

Northwest junior Wes Dreamer buried a three-pointer on the right wing with the shot clock ticking down with :42.2 left to even the game at 57-57.

SNU freshman guard Javon Jackson poured in a game-high 24 points, while shooting 9-of-13 from the field. Jackson hit the go-ahead jumper from the baseline with :14.8 left to give SNU a 59-57 lead.

Bernard drove the lane on the offensive end and was fouled with :07.1 left and was sent to the line for a one-and-one. Bernard missed the free throw and SNU's Davis grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Northwest had to commit three more fouls to get into the bonus. SNU was able to click the clock down to :02.1 left when senior Adokiye Iyaye sank both ends of a 1-and-1 to give the visitors a four-point cushion and the win.

Bernard scored a team-high 14 points as he lost only his fourth home game of his collegiate career.

Waters added 12 points off the bench as he connected on both of his three-point attempts.

Sophomore Isaiah Jackson made all five of his field goal attempts to score 10 points. He tied for team-high rebounding honors with five.

Southern Nazarene will take on Minnesota Duluth Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Central Region Final in Bearcat Arena.
