Bearcats tally 12-4 win over Sioux Falls

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Northwest Missouri State University softball team notched a 12-4, five-inning win over Sioux Falls at the ESU Classic held at Shawnee Lake Field.
Northwest evened its season record at 4-4.

The Bearcats tallied a first-inning run to take a 1-0 lead. Skyler Pieper led off the game by being hit by a pitch. Lillie Filger advanced her to second on a sacrifice bunt. Aubrey Griffith ripped a double over the left fielder's head to score Pieper.

Pieper continued to swing a hot bat as she stroked an RBI double down the right-field line to score Omara Love for a 2-0 Northwest lead. Filger reached on an infield single to third with no one out. Griffith laced a run-scoring single to center that plated Pieper for a three-run advantage. Nolte ripped a one-out, RBI double to right center to bring hom Filger to up the Northwest lead to 4-0. Northwest scored three runs on five hits in its three-run rally.

USF trimmed the lead to 4-2 with a two-run top of the fourth on the strength of three hits.

Pieper continued her sizzling swinging with a one-out RBI double to left center in the fourth. Love worked a walk and stole her second base of the game. Griffith lifted a fly ball to USF right fielder Jayden Haley dropped the out allowing Pieper to score and give Northwest a 6-2 lead. Nolte drove in Griffith with a single for another unearned run and a 7-2 Bearcat lead.

Northwest's Breck Dickey struck her first batter and got a pop out for the second out in the top of the fifth. However, she proceeded to allow three straight doubles that plated two USF run to cut the lead to 7-4.

Lauren Gray tattooed a shot to center field for a home run to lead off the bottom of the fifth for the Bearcats. It was Gray's first homer of the year and 10th of her Bearcat career.

Avery Anderson followed with a single and a stolen base. Love drove her in with a single down the left-field line. Pieper drew a walk and Hannah Blackford reached out an error that allowed Love to score and give Northwest a 10-4 lead. The Bearcats closed out the win on a bases loaded fielder's choice that allowed Pieper and Blackford to cross the plate for the mercy rule victory, 12-4.
