Hohensee's historic day, Bearcat defense lead to 52-0 shutout at Northeastern State

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northwest Missouri State University senior quarterback Mike Hohensee tied a program record with six touchdown passes and the Bearcat defense put up its second shutout of the season in a 52-0 blanking of the Northeastern State University RiverHawks.

The Bearcat victory ensures the 28th straight winning season in program history – the longest active streak among NCAA Div. II teams. Northwest improves to 6-4 overall, while NSU falls to 1-9.

Hohensee equaled the six-touchdown passing mark set by Zach Martin (vs. Missouri Southern on Sept. 23, 2017) and Kyle Zimmerman (vs. Pittsburg State on Oct. 29, 2016). Hohensee also became only the sixth quarterback in school history to pass for 300 or more yards and throw five touchdowns in a game. Hohensee threw for 359 yards and six touchdowns on 16-of-23 passing.

300 Yards Passing & 5+ TD passes
Chris Griesen, 311 yards, 5 TDs (vs. Midwestern State - 9/5/98)
Kyle Zimmerman, 385 yards, 6 TDs (vs. Pittsburg State - 9/16/00)
John McMenamin, 358 yards, 5 TDs (vs. Washburn - 10/5/02)
Trevor Adams, 444 yards, 5 TDs (vs. Eastern New Mexico - 10/15/11)
Zach Martin, 326 yards, 6 TDs (vs. Missouri Southern - 9/23/17)
Mike Hohensee, 359 yards, 6 TDs (vs. Northeastern State – 11/4/23)

For Hohensee it is his fifth 300-yard passing game of his career. It is the 67th time a Bearcat passer has thrown for 300 or more yards in a game in program history.

A pair of Bearcat wide receivers eclipsed the 100-yard receiving mark in the win. Kashan Griffin notched his fourth career 100-yard game with three receptions for 111 yards. Peyton Carder notched his first career 100-yard game with three catches for 104 yards and a score.

Hohensee's Touchdown Passes

Bearcat running back Jay Harris reached the 100-yard rushing mark for the 10th straight time this season with a 108-yard effort.

Northwest went over the 50-point mark for the 59th time in school history. Northwest has put up 50 or more points three times this season (59 vs. Lincoln, 52 at Washburn, 52 at Northeastern State). It is the 15th time that Northwest has scored 50 or more under the leadership of head coach Rich Wright.

The Bearcats have recorded 11 shutouts under coach Wright following Saturday's 52-0 blanking of the RiverHawks. It is the second time that a Wright-led team shutout NSU as the Bearcats held the RiverHawks to no points in a 7-0 win on Nov. 2, 2019.

Northwest's defense was extremely stingy on Saturday by limiting NSU to 124 total yards on 47 plays. NSU rushed the ball 26 times for seven yards. The RiverHawks went 11-of-21 passing for 117 yards. NSU was held to eight total first downs.

Sophomor defensive lineman Clayton Power put up six tackles, three tackles-for-loss, a sack, a fumble recovery, a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry.

The Bearcats produced a season-high 614 yards of total offense.

Northwest will wrap up the 2023 season at home next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers. Northwest will celebrate Senior Day and Ag Day at Bearcat Stadium.
