JOPLIN, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State University men's cross country team earned a trip to the NCAA Championships by claiming third place and an automatic bid on Saturday at the Central Regional meet.
The Bearcats claimed the third spot by slimmest of margins - one point. Northwest tallied 125 team points to edge out Washburn's team total of 126. East Central took first-place honors with 40 team points and Pittsburg State placed second with 112 team points.
It is the 13th time in program history that Northwest will compete at the NCAA Div. II national championship meet. Northwest last qualified as a team in the 2019 season.
Nate Mueller and Drew Atkins led the way for the Bearcat men, finishing 10
th and 11th. Mueller finished with a time of 30:39.86, which ranks him eighth all time in Bearcat history. Atkins, directly behind Mueller, finished with a time of 30:44.84.
The 'Cats were able to bunch up and edge out Washburn for the final spot with three finishers in spots No. 33 through No. 37.
Dillon Grover placed 33rd with a time of 31:44.67.
Brandon Mundorf took 34th with a clocking of 31:47.34.
Tyler Blay was Northwest's fifth scorer in 37th place with a time of 31:50.22.
The Northwest women placed ninth with 286 team points.
Alyna Thibault finished in 30th place with a time of 21:47.2. Thibault's time is a new personal record, which is ninth in Bearcat history.
Taylor McCreedy finished with a time of 21:55.98, earning her 37
th place. McCreedy's time is also a new personal best.
The 2023 NCAA Div. II National Championships are set for Nov. 18 in Joplin, Mo., at the Tom Rutledge XC Course.
