The Northwest Missouri State University women's soccer team will look to keep its season alive Friday at 2 p.m. when the Bearcats travel to Emporia State to take on the Hornets in a quarterfinal matchup in the 2023 MIAA Tournament.
Â
Northwest (8-4-6 overall) captured the No. 5 seed for the MIAA Tournament after going 5-2-4 in MIAA play. Northwest is one of the hottest teams in the nation as the Bearcats sport a nine-match unbeaten streak heading into tourney action. Northwest has produced six straight shutouts and has not allowed a goal in 621 minutes of action. Washburn was the last team to score on Northwest and it came in a 1-1 draw on Oct. 8.
Â
Emporia State (9-5-4 overall) is the No. 4 seed and earned home-field advantage for the quarterfinal matchup with a mark of 8-2-1 in MIAA play. The Hornets will feature the MIAA Player of the Year in Mackenzie Dimarco. Dimarco scored a league-high 16 goals this season. Dimarco is the MIAA's all-time goal scoring leader with 77 career goals.
Â
The all-time series between the two programs is dead even at 16-16-3. However, the Hornets have held the upper hand in the last 10 meetings by going 9-0-1. The only tie in the last 10 meetings came earlier this season when Northwest and ESU battled to a 2-2 deadlock at the Bearcat Pitch.
Â
Opponents have only outshot the Bearcats five times all season, including one tie in the first game of the season against Missouri-St. Louis.Â
Â
Last year in the 2022 MIAA tournament, Northwest hosted the quarterfinal round against Washburn and came out with a 3-0 win. Northwest was then knocked out of the 2022 MIAA tournament in the semifinals by Emporia State, 1-0.Â
Â
The winner of the Northwest-Emporia State matchup will face the winner of the Washburn-Missouri Western matchup on Thursday, Nov. 9
th at Stryker Sports Complex. Â
